Window tint darkness is measured in Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%) — the lower the number, the darker the tint. Every US state has different legal limits for each window position, and we install to comply with the laws of your state.

Windshield

Most states permit only a non-reflective tint strip on the top portion (typically 4–6 inches). Full windshield tinting is illegal in all 50 states for the driving area.

Front Side Windows

VLT% limits are strictest here — typically 70% in many states, dropping to 35% in others. Front windows require the most attention to local law as limits vary widely.

Rear & Back Windows

Most states permit significantly darker tint on rear windows — often with no restriction if the vehicle has functioning side mirrors. This is where most aesthetic and privacy benefit is achieved.

Film is applied wet to the glass using a slip solution that allows precise positioning before the adhesive fully activates. Once positioned correctly, the solution is squeegeed out from the centre outward — removing moisture, eliminating air pockets, and pressing the film flat against every curve in the glass. This process requires patience and technique — aggressive or rushed squeegee work causes stretch marks and edge lifting.

Edge Sealing & Final Inspection

Film edges are inspected and sealed where necessary to prevent moisture intrusion and edge lifting. Each completed window is checked for bubbles, inclusions, uneven adhesion, and edge alignment before the vehicle is returned. Any window that doesn’t meet our standard is redone — not handed over with a “that’ll clear up” explanation.

Most full vehicle tinting jobs are completed in 2–4 hours depending on the number of windows and vehicle complexity. After installation, windows must not be rolled down for 48–72 hours while the adhesive cures — rolling them down too early is the most common cause of film peeling at the edges.

Tint Aftercare — What to Do (and Avoid) After Install

The first 48–72 hours after installation are the most critical for tint longevity. After that, a few simple habits keep your tint looking perfect for years.

Don’t Roll Windows Down for 48–72 Hours

This is the single most important rule after installation. Rolling windows down before the adhesive has fully cured peels the film edge away from the glass seal — the most common preventable installation failure. Wait a minimum of 48 hours, longer in cold or humid weather.

Small Bubbles Are Normal — They Clear on Their Own

It’s normal to see small water bubbles (“blisters”) in freshly tinted windows during the first few days. These are moisture trapped between the film and glass during installation — they migrate out as the adhesive cures in warm conditions. Do not attempt to squeeze or puncture them. If bubbles persist beyond two weeks, contact us.

Use Only Ammonia-Free Window Cleaners

Ammonia-based cleaners (including many common household glass sprays) break down window film adhesive over time, causing bubbling, hazing, and film delamination. Always use an ammonia-free automotive glass cleaner on tinted windows. Apply to a soft microfibre cloth first — never spray directly onto the film edge.

Avoid Abrasive Cleaning Tools

Scrapers, steel wool, abrasive sponges, and rough cloths scratch the tint film surface permanently. Window tint is applied to the interior of the glass — clean the inside of your windows with a soft microfibre cloth only. Light surface scratches on film cannot be buffed out the way paint can.

Wait Before Going Through a Car Wash

We recommend waiting at least 3–4 days before taking your vehicle through a car wash — particularly the window edges. High-pressure rinses directed at fresh film edges before full cure can lift corners. Touchless car washes are generally lower risk than brush-type washes on tinted glass.

Sun Exposure Speeds Curing in Cold Weather

In cooler climates, parking your vehicle in direct sun for the first few days after installation accelerates the curing process — helping moisture bubbles clear faster and the adhesive bond fully. In very cold weather, curing may take up to a week, so extend the window-rolling restriction accordingly.

Yes — but the factory tint VLT% and the added film VLT% are multiplicative, not additive. If your rear glass is already at 80% VLT from the factory and you add 35% film, the resulting combined VLT% is approximately 28% (0.80 × 0.35). This means the darkening effect of film on factory-tinted glass is greater than on clear glass. We measure your existing glass VLT% before recommending a film shade to ensure the result is both what you want visually and compliant with your state’s laws.

This is completely normal and expected in the first 1–14 days after installation. The haze and small bubbles are moisture from the installation process migrating through and out of the film as the adhesive cures. They are not defects. In warm, sunny weather they typically clear within a few days. In cold or overcast conditions it can take up to two weeks. If any bubbles remain after 14 days in warm weather, contact us — genuine installation defects are covered under our 1-year labor warranty.

For most daily-driven vehicles, carbon film delivers excellent performance at a more accessible price point — it’s our most commonly recommended option. Ceramic film is worth the additional investment in specific scenarios: if you live in a very hot climate and maximum heat rejection is the priority; if you want light shades (high VLT%) with strong UV blocking where carbon film appearance would look too dark; or if a 10+ year manufacturer warranty with guaranteed performance is important to you. No — window film is applied to the interior glass surface and does not interfere with rear defroster elements embedded in the glass. Our installers take care to work around defroster lines during cleaning and application to avoid any damage. The heat generated by defroster elements can actually assist in curing the film adhesive during cold weather. If defroster lines are already damaged before tinting, we note this prior to installation so it can’t be attributed to our work.

Dyed film typically shows degradation in 3–5 years — the first sign is a colour shift toward purple-brown as the dye breaks down. Carbon film lasts significantly longer without visible degradation. Ceramic film with a manufacturer warranty can last 10+ years. Signs that film needs replacing include: persistent purple discolouration, large stubborn bubbles (not the small post-install ones), film delaminating or peeling from edges, or significant hazing that doesn’t clean off.
