Door Painting & Refinishing
Doors Are the Most Handled Surface in the Home — They Show Every Bit of Wear
Every door in the house gets touched hundreds of times a day. The area around the handle wears through first, then the edges, then the face panels. A tired-looking door drags down the whole room regardless of how good the wall paint looks.
NorTech paints and refinishes interior and front entry doors across Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, Charlotte, Nashville, San Antonio, Jacksonville, Denver, Atlanta, and the rest of the country. Doors can be painted as part of a full room or trim project, or as a standalone full-home door package. We remove doors where possible for the best finish quality and reinstall everything before we leave.

Our Process
How NorTech Paints Interior Doors
Five steps from worn, scratched doors to a smooth, durable painted finish on every surface.
Remove & Prep
Doors removed from hinges and laid flat. Hardware removed. Hinge areas taped to protect door frames during painting.
Sand & Clean
Door face and edges sanded to remove gloss, scuffs, and buildup. Panel profile details cleaned — paint accumulation in recesses makes doors look cheap.
Prime
Stain-blocking or bonding primer applied where needed — bare wood, repaired areas, or color changes. Previously painted doors in good condition go directly to finish coats.
Apply Finish Coats
Two coats applied by brush and roller in the correct panel sequence — panels first, then rails, then stiles. This sequence eliminates lap marks on panel doors.
Cure & Reinstall
Doors allowed to cure fully before reinstallation to prevent the finish sticking to the door frame. Hardware reinstalled and operation checked before we leave.
Common Situations
Door Painting Situations We Handle Every Day
Every home’s doors come in with their own history. These are the six situations our crews encounter most often.
Worn Finish Around the Handle
The handle area wears through paint faster than anywhere else. We sand smooth, prime, and blend the repair seamlessly into the finish coats on both faces.
Dark Doors Against White Trim
Black, navy, or charcoal interior doors against white trim is one of the most requested design choices. We plan the masking at the casing before mixing to ensure a clean color transition with no bleed.
Panel Door Sequence
Panel doors require painting in a specific sequence — panels before rails before stiles — to avoid lap marks. This is non-negotiable on quality panel door work and something most DIY attempts get wrong.
Paint Buildup on Edges
Repeated painting without sanding causes edge buildup that eventually prevents doors from closing cleanly. We sand all edges back before painting to restore proper clearance.
Front Door Fading or Peeling
Exterior front doors exposed to sun fade and peel faster than interior surfaces. We strip failing paint, prime with exterior bonding primer, and apply a topcoat rated for UV and moisture exposure.
Full Home Door Package
Painting all interior doors throughout the home is one of our most efficient whole-home projects. We sequence rooms so doors dry while the crew works on the next set — most homes completed in one to two days.

What Homeowners Say About NorTech Door Painters
Real reviews from customers across our service areas.
“All 14 interior doors painted in one day — removed, painted flat, reinstalled. The finish is smooth with zero drips or brush marks. Looks like they came straight from a cabinet shop.”
“All interior doors painted black against white trim. The line at the casing is clean on every single door — no black on the trim anywhere. Makes the whole house feel completely different.”
“Front door was peeling badly. They stripped it, primed, and applied high-gloss black. It looks custom. Several neighbors have asked who did it since we finished.”
“Solid wood panel doors refinished in walnut stain — they had been painted over years ago. The grain is beautiful now and the topcoat is holding perfectly six months in.”
“The panel door sequence they used — panels first, then rails, then stiles — left zero lap marks. Every previous paint job on these doors had that issue. Night and day difference.”
“Used NORTECH15 and saved on all the bedroom doors. The edges were sanded back and now every door closes cleanly — paint buildup had been making them stick for years.”
Common Questions
Door Painting & Refinishing — Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to what homeowners ask most before booking a door painting service.
Door painting cost depends on the number of doors, whether they are hollow-core or panel, whether both sides are painted, and the condition of the existing finish. NorTech provides a written upfront estimate before any work begins.
For the best finish quality, doors should be removed and painted horizontally — this eliminates drips and brush marks on the face panels. NorTech removes doors, paints them flat, allows cure time, and reinstalls them.
Semi-gloss is the standard for interior doors — durable, wipeable, and scuff resistant. Satin is an alternative for a softer look. High-gloss is used on front doors and statement interior doors where maximum sheen is desired.
Yes. Front door painting is one of our most popular standalone services. We paint the door face, edges, and casing as a single scope without requiring interior doors to be included.
Yes. Door staining and refinishing — stripping, sanding, applying a new stain color, and topcoating — is available for solid wood doors. We assess door condition during the estimate to confirm the right approach.
A single front door typically takes half a day. A full home interior door package for a 3-bedroom home takes one to two days depending on the number of doors and whether panel door detail work is required.
Yes. Dark doors against white trim is a popular design choice NorTech handles regularly. We plan the masking at the casing line before any paint is mixed to ensure a clean transition with no bleed.
