Before You Call
Four Things to Check First
Some refrigerator issues have simple causes that don’t require a technician. Work through this checklist first — if none of these fix it, NorTech will.
Diagnostic Checklist — check each step before calling for service
Step 1
Check the Temperature Settings
Refrigerator controls are sometimes accidentally changed — especially on touch panel models. The fresh food section should be set between 35–38°F and the freezer at 0°F. If settings were bumped to a warmer position, allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize before concluding there’s a mechanical fault.
Step 2
Check the Door Seals
A refrigerator that runs constantly but struggles to stay cold often has a door gasket that isn’t sealing properly. Run your hand around the door edge with the fridge closed — you shouldn’t feel cold air escaping. A simple test: close the door on a piece of paper. If it pulls out easily, the gasket needs replacement.
Step 3
Check the Condenser Coils
Condenser coils on the bottom or back of the unit collect dust and pet hair over time. Heavily clogged coils prevent the refrigerator from dissipating heat and cause the compressor to work harder — leading to poor cooling and increased running time. Coils can be vacuumed with a brush attachment.
Step 4
Check for Blocked Air Vents Inside
Overpacking a refrigerator blocks the internal air vents that circulate cold air between the freezer and fresh food sections. If food is pressed against the back wall or vents, rearrange items to allow airflow and give the unit 4–6 hours to recover before assessing the temperature again.
What We Do
Refrigerator Repair and Installation
Whether your refrigerator has broken down or you need a new unit professionally installed, NorTech handles both — with the same technician, the same warranty, and the same upfront pricing.
Refrigerator Repair
A refrigerator failure puts your food supply at immediate risk. NorTech technicians carry parts for all major brands on every truck and prioritize refrigerator dispatch above other appliance calls. We diagnose the root cause — not just the symptom — so the repair holds long-term.
- Refrigerator not cooling or barely cold
- Freezer not freezing or over-freezing
- Ice maker not producing ice
- Water dispenser not working
- Excessive frost or ice buildup inside
- Refrigerator freezing food in fresh section
- Loud running noise or compressor cycling
- Water leaking inside or under the unit
- Door seal and gasket failures
- Control board and temperature sensor faults
Refrigerator Installation
A refrigerator that isn’t leveled correctly will have door alignment problems and compressor wear. One that isn’t connected to the water supply properly will leak. NorTech handles every step of the installation — positioning, leveling, water line connection, ice maker activation, door swing adjustment, and haul-away of the old unit.
- Positioning and space clearance check
- Leveling on all four feet
- Water supply line connection
- Ice maker activation and test
- Water dispenser line flush and test
- Door swing direction adjustment
- Handle and door alignment check
- Temperature pre-set and cool-down verification
- Old unit disconnect and haul-away
All Configurations
Every Refrigerator Type We Service
NorTech technicians are trained on all refrigerator configurations — from standard top-freezer units to built-in counter-depth and luxury models.
French Door
The most common premium configuration. Ice maker, dual evaporator, and door-in-door faults are typical. We carry parts for all major French door models.
Side-by-Side
Ice maker and water dispenser issues are most frequent. Evaporator fan and defrost system failures also common on older units.
Bottom-Freezer
Defrost drain blockages and evaporator fan failures are the typical faults. Pull-out drawer mechanisms also wear over time.
Top-Freezer
The most repair-friendly configuration. Thermostat, defrost timer, and evaporator fan repairs are straightforward same-visit jobs on most brands.
Counter-Depth & Built-In
Premium models from Sub-Zero, Thermador, and Viking. We service all built-in and counter-depth configurations with the same 1-year labor warranty.
Mini & Compact Fridges
Dorm, office, and under-counter compact refrigerators. Thermostat, compressor, and sealed system repairs for all compact models.

What Affects the Cost of Refrigerator Repair?
Refrigerator repair and installation costs depend on the unit type, the fault, and what connections are required. Click any factor to learn more.
French door and side-by-side models have more complex internal systems than top-freezer units. Built-in and counter-depth models add access and labor time.
An evaporator fan or door gasket costs far less than a compressor or control board. The diagnostic pinpoints the exact fault before any quote is given.
Premium brands like Sub-Zero, Viking, and Thermador carry significantly higher parts costs than standard consumer models. Parts availability also varies.
Installing a new refrigerator with an ice maker or water dispenser requires a water line connection, which adds to the installation scope.
Removing and disposing of the old refrigerator is available on request. Quoted upfront as part of the installation estimate.
Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins — no surprises.
Diagnose the Problem
Common Refrigerator Problems and What Causes Them
Most refrigerator failures have a predictable root cause. Here’s what the symptom usually points to — and what NorTech does to fix it.
Refrigerator Not Cooling
A fridge running but not cooling almost always points to one of four causes: a failed evaporator fan motor (most common), dirty condenser coils blocking heat dissipation, a defrost system failure causing frost to block airflow, or a failing compressor. NorTech carries parts for all four on every truck.
Freezer Not Freezing
When the fridge section works but the freezer won’t freeze, the compressor is almost always running fine — the problem is usually a failed start relay, a refrigerant issue, or a sealed system fault. If the freezer is warm and the fridge is warm, the compressor needs to be assessed.
Refrigerator Freezing Food
Fresh food compartments that freeze contents typically have a faulty temperature control thermostat stuck in the cold position, a stuck-open damper dumping too much cold air into the fresh section, or a failed thermistor giving incorrect readings to the control board.
Ice Maker Not Working
A frozen water supply line is the most overlooked cause — easy to fix. A faulty water inlet valve that won’t open to fill the ice maker is the most common mechanical cause. Ice maker module failures and blocked ice chutes round out the typical culprits. Most are same-visit repairs.
Excessive Frost Buildup
Heavy frost on the evaporator coils points directly to a defrost system failure — either a burned-out defrost heater, a failed defrost thermostat, or a bad defrost control timer or board. Left unresolved, frost buildup completely blocks airflow and causes the fridge to stop cooling entirely.
Water Leaking Inside or Under
Water pooling inside the fresh food compartment almost always comes from a blocked defrost drain — the drain tube freezes or gets clogged with debris and water backs up. Leaking under the unit can indicate an overflowing drain pan or a leaking water inlet valve.
Repair or Replace?
When to Repair Your Refrigerator vs. Buy New
Refrigerators last 12–18 years on average. Most faults that occur before the 10-year mark are worth repairing — the components are well-understood and parts are available. Here’s how to think about it.
Repair Makes Sense When…
- The unit is under 10 years old
- Repair cost is under 50% of replacement value
- The fault is a single component — fan, sensor, valve
- The compressor is confirmed healthy
- It’s a premium built-in or counter-depth model
- The ice maker or dispenser failed but the fridge cools fine
- Replacement requires cabinetry or countertop modifications
New Installation Makes Sense When…
- The unit is 12+ years old
- The compressor has failed on a standard model
- This is the second or third major repair in two years
- The sealed refrigerant system has a leak
- Parts are discontinued or no longer available
- Energy costs from an aging unit justify replacement
- You’re remodeling and upgrading the full kitchen

Common Questions
Refrigerator Repair and Installation — FAQ
Refrigerator repair costs vary depending on the model and the component that failed. NorTech provides a full diagnostic estimate on-site before any work begins — you approve the price before we start.
Installation cost depends on the refrigerator type, whether a water line connection is required for the ice maker or dispenser, and whether haul-away of the old unit is included. NorTech provides upfront pricing before installation begins.
The most common causes are a failed evaporator fan motor, dirty or blocked condenser coils, a defrost system failure causing frost to block airflow, or a failing compressor. NorTech diagnoses the root cause on the first visit and carries the most common parts on the truck.
A refrigerator that freezes food in the fresh food compartment typically has a faulty temperature control thermostat, a stuck-open damper letting too much cold air in, or a failed thermistor giving incorrect temperature readings to the control board.
Common causes include a frozen water supply line, a faulty water inlet valve not allowing water to fill the ice maker, a failed ice maker module, or a blocked ice chute. Many ice maker issues are resolved on the first visit without ordering parts.
