Know Your System
Ducted vs. Ductless Range Hoods
Understanding which type you have determines how it’s serviced and what installation involves. NorTech works on both.
Ducted (Vented) Range Hoods
Exhaust air outside the home
Ducted hoods pull smoke, grease, steam, and cooking odors through a duct run that exits through an exterior wall or roof cap. They are significantly more effective at removing heat, moisture, and airborne grease than ductless models.
- More effective ventilation overall
- Removes heat and moisture from the kitchen
- Requires duct run to exterior โ more complex install
- Grease filters need regular cleaning
- Duct blockages reduce suction over time
Ductless (Recirculating) Range Hoods
Filter and return air to the kitchen
Ductless hoods pull air through charcoal filters that absorb odors and grease before returning filtered air to the kitchen. No exterior duct run is needed, making installation simpler. Performance is lower than ducted hoods and filter replacement is required regularly.
- No exterior duct required โ simpler installation
- Lower ventilation performance than ducted
- Charcoal filters must be replaced every 3โ6 months
- Does not remove heat or moisture from the kitchen
- Can be converted to ducted if layout allows
What We Do
Range Hood Repair and Installation
Whether your range hood has stopped working or you need a new unit mounted and connected, NorTech handles both with upfront pricing and a 1-year labor warranty on all work.
Range Hood Repair
A range hood that doesn’t ventilate properly fills your kitchen with grease-laden air, coats surfaces with residue, and over time creates a grease buildup risk in the duct. NorTech diagnoses and repairs all range hood faults โ fan motor failures, light issues, control panel faults, and suction problems on both ducted and ductless models.
- Fan motor not running or running weakly
- Hood light not working or flickering
- Control panel buttons not responding
- Suction significantly reduced
- Excessive noise during operation
- Speed settings not changing correctly
- Hood running constantly and won’t shut off
- Wiring and electrical faults
Range Hood Installation
Range hood installation involves more than mounting the unit. For ducted hoods, the duct run must be sized correctly, routed without sharp bends that reduce airflow, and terminated with a proper exterior cap. NorTech handles the full installation โ mounting, electrical connection, duct routing, and a suction test before we leave.
- Wall or cabinet mounting and securing
- Electrical hardwire or plug-in connection
- Duct sizing and routing to exterior
- Exterior wall or roof cap installation
- Ductless charcoal filter setup
- Island hood ceiling mount and suspension
- Suction and function test before completion
- Old unit removal and haul-away

What Affects the Cost of Range Hood Repair & Installation?
Range hood repair and installation pricing depends on the hood type, duct configuration, and the component involved. Click any factor to learn more.
Under-cabinet hoods are the most straightforward. Wall-mount chimney hoods require more mounting work. Island hoods require ceiling suspension and overhead duct routing.
Ducted installations require duct sizing, routing, and an exterior cap. Ductless installations are simpler. Converting from ductless to ducted adds significant scope.
A light socket or control switch is a quick fix. A fan motor or control board replacement involves more disassembly and higher parts cost.
Existing duct runs with heavy grease accumulation may need cleaning before a new hood can be installed. Duct condition is assessed as part of every installation.
Professional hoods from Viking, Wolf, and Thermador carry higher parts costs and sometimes require longer lead times for parts availability.
Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins โ no surprises.
Diagnose the Problem
Common Range Hood Problems and What Causes Them
Most range hood failures come down to a small number of components. Here’s what each symptom usually means.
Fan Running But No Suction
A fan that runs but barely pulls air almost always has a saturated grease filter completely blocking airflow โ this is the most overlooked cause. A blocked duct run with accumulated grease is the next culprit on ducted models. On ductless hoods, a full charcoal filter is the equivalent issue. Both are maintenance fixes, not component failures.
Fan Motor Not Running
A range hood that powers on but the fan doesn’t spin has a failed fan motor in most cases. A faulty speed control switch that isn’t sending signal to the motor is the second cause. On some models, a failed capacitor prevents the motor from starting even though it receives power.
Hood Light Not Working
The most common cause is simply a burned-out bulb โ LED replacement bulbs are not always straightforward on range hoods due to voltage requirements. A failed light switch or a wiring fault in the light circuit are the mechanical causes. Some hoods require specific bulb types that aren’t available at standard retail stores.
Excessive Noise During Operation
A rattling or vibrating noise usually means a loose grease filter or a panel that isn’t seated properly. A grinding or whirring noise from the motor indicates worn fan motor bearings โ this gets louder over time and eventually leads to motor failure. Address motor noise early to avoid a full motor replacement.
Control Panel Not Responding
Touchpad controls that stop responding are typically caused by a failed control board or a damaged touchpad membrane. On slide-switch and rotary knob models, the switch contacts wear out over time. Grease contamination in the control area is also a common cause on older hoods.
Hood Won’t Shut Off
A range hood that runs continuously has a stuck relay on the control board or a failed control switch that can’t break the circuit to the motor. This is usually a control board replacement on modern hoods or a simple switch replacement on older mechanical models.
Grease buildup in range hood ducts is a fire hazard. A duct that hasn’t been cleaned in years accumulates grease on the interior walls. If a grease fire starts on the cooktop and draws into the duct, accumulated grease can ignite and spread the fire through the duct to the wall cavity. NorTech inspects duct condition as part of every range hood service call.

Common Questions
Range Hood Repair and Installation โ FAQ
Repair costs vary depending on the model and the component that failed. NorTech provides a full diagnostic estimate on-site before any work begins โ you approve the price before we start.
Installation cost depends on the hood type, whether duct routing is required, the mounting location, and whether haul-away of the old unit is included. Ductless installations are generally simpler and less expensive than new ducted runs. NorTech provides upfront pricing before installation begins.
Reduced suction is most often caused by a clogged or saturated grease filter blocking airflow, a failed fan motor, or a blocked duct run. On ductless models, a charcoal filter that needs replacement is the most common cause of poor performance.
A ducted hood vents grease, smoke, and odors outside through a duct run to an exterior wall or roof cap. A ductless hood recirculates air through charcoal filters before returning it to the kitchen. Ducted hoods are significantly more effective at removing heat and moisture.
Yes. NorTech can plan and install the duct run required to convert a ductless recirculating hood to a ducted exterior-venting configuration. Feasibility depends on your kitchen layout and access to an exterior wall or roof.
Mesh and baffle grease filters should be cleaned every 1 to 3 months depending on cooking frequency. Charcoal filters on ductless models should be replaced every 3 to 6 months โ they cannot be cleaned. A saturated filter is the most common cause of reduced range hood performance.
We service all major brands including Broan, Zline, Cosmo, KitchenAid, Bosch, Samsung, LG, GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Viking, Thermador, Wolf, Faber, Elica, and more.
Yes. Every range hood repair and installation NorTech completes is backed by a 1-year labor warranty. If the same issue returns within 12 months, we come back and fix it at no charge.
