Before You Call
Three Things to Check First
Some dishwasher issues have straightforward causes. Work through this checklist before requesting service โ if none of these fix it, NorTech will.
Diagnostic Checklist โ check each step before calling for service
Step 1
Check the Door Latch Is Fully Closed
A dishwasher will not start a cycle if the door latch isn’t fully engaged โ this is the single most common cause of a dishwasher that appears dead. Push the door firmly until you hear the latch click. On some models the control panel lights up only after the door is properly latched.
Step 2
Clean the Filter at the Bottom of the Tub
Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter assembly at the bottom of the tub that catches food debris. A clogged filter severely reduces wash performance and can cause draining issues. Twist and remove the filter, rinse it under running water, and reinstall. This should be done every 1โ2 months.
Step 3
Check the Drain Hose Isn’t Kinked
A kinked drain hose under the sink prevents water from exiting the dishwasher after a cycle, leaving standing water in the tub. Open the cabinet under the sink and confirm the drain hose has a smooth curve to the drain connection with no sharp bends or compression points.

What Affects the Cost of Dishwasher Repair & Installation?
Dishwasher repair and installation costs depend on the model, the fault type, and what connections are involved. Click any factor to learn more.
Clearing a clogged filter or replacing a door latch is a quick fix. A wash pump motor, control board, or sump assembly repair involves more time and higher parts cost.
Premium brands like Bosch and Miele use proprietary parts that cost more than standard consumer models. Parts availability also affects scheduling.
Replacing an existing dishwasher with standard connections is straightforward. Running new water supply lines or drain modifications adds scope to the job.
Panel-ready models require additional alignment and trim work during installation. Custom door panels must be fitted precisely to close and latch correctly.
If a dishwasher has been leaking, the technician will assess surrounding cabinet and subfloor condition before completing the installation or repair.
Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins โ no surprises.
Diagnose the Problem
Common Dishwasher Problems and What Causes Them
Most dishwasher failures come down to a small number of components. Here’s what each symptom usually points to.
Dishwasher Not Draining
A clogged drain filter is the first thing to check โ food debris builds up in the filter basket and blocks drainage. A failed drain pump motor, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a faulty check valve are the mechanical causes. Most drain issues are resolved on the first visit.
Dishes Not Getting Clean
Clogged or cracked spray arms that can’t distribute water evenly are the most common cause. A failed wash pump that isn’t generating enough pressure is the next. A blocked filter also reduces wash performance significantly. Water temperature issues from a failed heating element round out the typical causes.
Dishwasher Leaking
Door leaks almost always point to a worn or damaged door gasket โ the rubber seal around the door frame that compresses when closed. Leaks from underneath typically indicate a failed pump seal, a cracked sump, or a loose drain hose connection. Using too much or the wrong detergent also causes overflow leaks.
Dishwasher Not Starting
A dishwasher that shows no response is often a door latch issue โ if the latch doesn’t fully engage, the control board won’t allow the cycle to start. A tripped thermal fuse, a failed control board, or a wiring fault are the other common causes. Check that the door is fully latched before calling โ it’s the most-overlooked fix.
Dishes Not Drying
On dishwashers that use a heating element for drying, a failed element is the direct cause. On condensation-drying models like Bosch, poor drying performance is often a rinse aid issue rather than a mechanical fault. A failed vent or vent fan on models that use active drying is also a common culprit.
Dishwasher Making Loud Noise
A grinding or chopping noise during the wash cycle usually means a foreign object โ a broken glass fragment, a small utensil โ has gotten into the pump area. A worn wash pump bearing or a damaged spray arm hitting the racks are the other typical causes. Humming without water circulation points to a seized pump motor.
Dishwasher leaks cause more damage than they appear to. A slow leak under the cabinet saturates the subfloor and cabinet base before it becomes visible. If your dishwasher has been leaking for any amount of time, have it inspected promptly โ the repair cost of a door gasket or pump seal is a fraction of the cost of water-damaged cabinetry or flooring.
Repair or Replace?
When to Repair Your Dishwasher vs. Install New
Dishwashers typically last 9โ12 years. Most component failures before the 8-year mark are worth repairing โ parts are widely available and the repair is usually straightforward.
Repair Makes Sense Whenโฆ
- The unit is under 8 years old
- Repair cost is under 50% of replacement value
- The fault is a single component โ pump, latch, valve
- It’s a premium model like Bosch or Miele
- Replacement requires countertop or cabinet modifications
- It’s a panel-ready unit with a custom door panel
New Installation Makes Sense Whenโฆ
- The unit is 10+ years old
- This is the second or third major repair
- The tub or sump has cracked or corroded
- The control board has failed on an older basic model
- Parts are discontinued or unavailable
- Persistent leak damage has compromised the unit structure
