Signs It’s Time
Is It Time to Replace Your Ceiling Fan?
- The fan wobbles or shakes. A wobbling ceiling fan usually means the blades are unbalanced, the mounting bracket is loose, or the ceiling box is not fan-rated. This is a safety issue β a wobbling fan can eventually pull the box out of the ceiling. Replace the fan and have the box inspected at the same time.
- It’s loud β clicking, grinding, or humming. Noise indicates worn bearings, a loose blade bracket, or a failing motor. Modern fans are nearly silent at all speeds. If yours is audible from across the room, a replacement will make a dramatic difference in comfort.
- The remote or pull chain stopped working. Receiver failures and broken pull chain mechanisms are common in fans older than 10 years. Replacement is almost always more cost-effective than repair β and you’ll gain efficiency and smart control options with a newer model.
- You’re upgrading to a smart fan. Smart ceiling fans with app and voice control, variable speed motors, and integrated light kits require proper wiring to work correctly. NorTech installs any smart fan model and ensures the wall switch wiring is compatible.

“Had two ceiling fans installed in the same visit β master bedroom and living room. The technician was efficient, cleaned up after himself, and both fans work perfectly.”
James K.“I had a vaulted ceiling and wasn’t sure if installation was even possible. NorTech came out, brought the right downrod, and had the fan up and running the same day. Very knowledgeable.”
Renata S.“The old box in my ceiling wasn’t fan-rated. The technician caught it immediately, replaced it, and installed my new fan without any issues. Really glad they checked first.”
Carlos M.“Good work overall β fan is installed and running great. Only reason for 4 stars is I had to wait about a week for the appointment. Once they showed up everything went smoothly.”
Patricia V.“Got a smart ceiling fan installed in the bedroom β the tech added a neutral wire so the wall switch would work with the smart controller. Pairs perfectly with our setup now.”
Brandon L.“Five fans replaced throughout the house in one visit. The team was organized, didn’t leave a mess, and every fan was tested before they packed up. Exactly what you want.”
Yolanda F.Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions β Ceiling Fan Installation & Wiring
How long does ceiling fan installation take?
Most ceiling fan installations take between one and two hours. If a new ceiling box needs to be installed or wiring needs to be run to a new location, the job may take two to three hours depending on attic or ceiling access.
Can a ceiling fan be installed where there is no existing wiring?
Yes. NorTech electricians can run new wiring to install a ceiling fan in a room that does not have an existing ceiling outlet or light fixture. This typically involves running wire through the attic or wall cavities and installing a proper fan-rated ceiling box.
What is a fan-rated ceiling box and do I need one?
A fan-rated ceiling box is specifically designed to support the weight and movement of a ceiling fan. Standard light fixture boxes are not rated for fans and can fail over time. If your existing box is not fan-rated, it must be replaced before installation β this is included in NorTech’s installation service.
Can NorTech install a ceiling fan with a remote or smart control?
Yes. NorTech installs ceiling fans with remote controls, pull chains, wall controls, and smart fan controllers compatible with Alexa, Google Home, and other home automation systems. If your wall switch does not have a neutral wire required for smart controls, our electricians can assess and address that during the visit.
How much does ceiling fan installation cost?
Ceiling fan installation cost depends on factors including whether an existing fixture is being replaced or a new ceiling box is required, ceiling height, the type of fan and controls, and accessibility. NorTech provides a transparent written estimate before any work begins.
Can you install a ceiling fan on a vaulted or high ceiling?
Yes. NorTech installs ceiling fans on standard, vaulted, sloped, and high ceilings. Vaulted ceilings require a downrod and angled mounting bracket. High ceilings may require additional equipment for safe installation. Our electricians arrive prepared for these scenarios.
Do I need to supply the ceiling fan or does NorTech provide it?
NorTech installs customer-supplied fans as well as fans sourced through our service. If you have already purchased a fan, our electricians will install it. If you need help selecting the right fan for your space, we can advise during the estimate.
What happens to my old ceiling fan or light fixture?
NorTech removes and disposes of your existing ceiling fan or light fixture as part of the installation service. If you want to keep the old fixture, just let your technician know before they begin.
