Material Guide
Wallpaper Types NorTech Installs
Wallpaper has evolved significantly โ material choice affects how it installs, how it performs, and how long it lasts. NorTech technicians are trained across every major wallcovering type.
Traditional Paste Wallpaper
Applied with wallpaper adhesive โ the most durable and long-lasting wallpaper installation method. Paste wallpaper lies flatter, holds seams more reliably over time, and is available in the widest range of patterns and textures. Requires careful wall prep and booking time for adhesive to cure.
Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
Self-adhesive panels that apply without paste or priming โ removable and repositionable in most cases. Requires a perfectly smooth, clean wall surface to adhere properly. More forgiving for renters or those who want the flexibility to change patterns. Seams require careful alignment during installation.
Grasscloth & Natural Fiber
Woven natural materials โ seagrass, jute, sisal, and bamboo โ backed on paper and hung with paste. Each panel is slightly different in texture and shade, so seam visibility is inherent and expected. Requires careful handling to avoid adhesive bleed-through on the face. Not recommended for high-humidity spaces.
Wallpaper Murals
Large-format printed panels that together form a single continuous image across one wall. Installation requires precise panel alignment from the first strip โ any misalignment propagates across every subsequent panel. The starting position and panel sequence are planned before the first piece goes up.
Vinyl & Vinyl-Coated
Highly durable, washable, and moisture-resistant โ vinyl wallpaper is the practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas. Solid vinyl is the most durable wallcovering available for residential use. Vinyl-coated paper offers similar moisture resistance at a lower price point.
Textured & Embossed
Three-dimensional surface patterns โ raised geometric designs, fabric textures, and embossed patterns โ that add tactile depth to a wall. Requires careful seam alignment so the texture pattern matches across panels. Often used to add architectural character to rooms without molding or trim work.
Where We Install
Wallpaper Applications by Room
Wallpaper works differently in different rooms โ the material choice, prep requirements, and layout considerations change based on where it’s going. NorTech installs wallpaper in every residential application.
Accent Walls
A single feature wall behind a bed, sofa, or fireplace โ the most common wallpaper application. Accent walls are faster to install than full rooms and have a dramatic visual impact. Most accent wall installs are completed in a single visit.
Full Room Installation
All four walls papered continuously โ requires planning the starting point so the pattern breaks in the least visible location, usually behind a door. Full rooms involve more cuts around windows, doors, and outlets and typically take one to two days.
Dining Rooms
One of the most traditional wallpaper applications. Dining rooms have fewer obstacles than other rooms and allow patterns to run continuously. Grasscloth and textured wallpaper are particularly popular in dining room applications.
Bedrooms
Primary bedroom feature walls behind the headboard are the most searched wallpaper application currently. Pattern scale matters in bedroom applications โ oversized patterns need ceiling height to work properly, while smaller repeats work in any room proportion.
Entryways & Hallways
Narrow spaces with many obstacles โ doors, light switches, outlets โ that require more cuts per linear foot than open rooms. Pattern scale should be appropriate for the tight viewing distance typical of hallway spaces.
Ceilings
Ceiling wallpaper installation is physically demanding and requires a different technique than wall installation โ panels run in one direction with no gravity assistance. NorTech installs ceiling wallpaper on request, including textured and fabric-backed options.
Diagnose the Issue
Common Wallpaper Problems That Come From Poor Installation
Most wallpaper failures are not material failures โ they’re installation failures. These are the problems NorTech sees most often and what causes them.
Bubbles & Blistering
Air trapped between the wallpaper and the wall surface during installation. Bubbles that appear immediately are usually workable while the adhesive is wet. Bubbles that appear after drying indicate adhesive that was applied unevenly or a wall surface that wasn’t properly prepared to accept adhesive.
Seams Lifting or Opening
Seams that separate after installation are caused by insufficient adhesive at the edges, adhesive contamination from paste wiped onto the seam face, or installation on an unprimed wall that absorbed adhesive before the panel could adhere. Open seams allow moisture behind the wallpaper and worsen over time.
Pattern Mismatch at Seams
Pattern that doesn’t align across panel seams is a layout planning failure โ the repeat was not accounted for correctly before cutting began. This cannot be corrected without removing and rehinging the misaligned panels with properly planned cuts.
Adhesive Bleed-Through
Paste visible on the face of the wallpaper โ particularly common with grasscloth and light-colored papers โ comes from applying too much adhesive or wiping paste from one panel onto an adjacent panel face during installation. Prevention requires clean technique; correction requires panel replacement in severe cases.
Crooked or Unlevel Strips
Wallpaper that drifts out of plumb across the wall โ one of the most visible installation errors. Every new installation should start with a plumb line established by level, not by following an existing wall edge. Walls are rarely perfectly plumb and following the wall corner guarantees drift.
Damage Under Old Wallpaper
When old wallpaper is removed improperly โ especially from unprimed drywall โ the paper face of the drywall tears away. This leaves a rough, absorbent surface that must be skim-coated and primed before new wallpaper can be hung without adhesion failure and visible surface irregularities.

What Homeowners Are Saying About NorTech Wallpaper Work
Reviews from customers across our wallpaper installation and removal service territory.
Grasscloth in the dining room โ four walls. The seams are as tight as grasscloth seams can get and there’s no adhesive on the face anywhere. Technician handled the material carefully and the result looks exactly like the design inspiration I showed him.
Mural wallpaper in the primary bedroom โ a large landscape print across one wall. The panels aligned perfectly. The technician planned the layout before cutting a single strip and the center of the image landed exactly where I asked for it.
Had old wallpaper removed from the entryway and new paper hung. The removal was clean โ no gouges in the drywall. They patched the few areas that needed it and primed before hanging the new paper. Would book again.
Textured vinyl wallpaper in the powder room. Tight seams, clean cuts around the mirror and outlet, and zero bubbles. The room was done in a few hours and it looked finished and intentional โ not DIY.
Peel-and-stick wallpaper in a bedroom accent wall. I was skeptical that peel-and-stick could look professional but the seams are tight and it’s been up for months without peeling at the edges. Key was the wall prep they did before starting.
Traditional paste wallpaper in the living room โ a bold geometric pattern with a large repeat. Every seam lines up, the pattern is level across the wall, and the cuts at the ceiling are clean. Took most of the day but it was done right.

Wallpaper Installation โ Frequently Asked Questions
Questions customers ask before booking wallpaper installation with NorTech.
Wallpaper installation costs vary based on wallpaper type, wall square footage, pattern repeat size, and wall condition. NorTech provides upfront estimates before any work begins. Request a free quote for a project-specific price.
Yes. Wallpaper removal can be included in your project scope. Old wallpaper must be fully removed and the wall surface properly repaired and primed before new wallpaper is hung โ installing over existing wallpaper leads to seam failure and bubbling.
Yes. New drywall and bare walls must be primed with a wallpaper-specific primer before installation. Primer creates the right surface for adhesion and makes future removal significantly easier. NorTech includes wall priming as part of the installation preparation when needed.
A single accent wall typically takes two to four hours. A full room can take one to two days depending on room size, number of obstacles like windows and doors, and pattern repeat complexity. Your technician will provide a timeline based on the specific scope.
Yes. Peel-and-stick wallpaper installation requires a clean, smooth, properly prepared wall surface. NorTech handles surface preparation, panel alignment, bubble removal, and seam matching for peel-and-stick installations just as we do for traditional paste wallpaper.
Pattern matching is one of the most technically demanding aspects of wallpaper installation. NorTech technicians plan the layout before cutting any panels, accounting for pattern repeat, starting point, and how the pattern will align at corners, windows, and seams. Extra wallpaper beyond the stated square footage is typically needed to account for pattern matching โ your technician will advise on quantities.
Yes, with the right material selection. Vinyl and vinyl-coated wallpapers are moisture-resistant and suitable for bathrooms. Natural fiber wallpapers like grasscloth are not recommended in high-humidity areas. NorTech advises on material suitability for the installation location before any work begins.
Yes. All NorTech wallpaper installation labor is covered by a 1-year labor warranty. If any installation we performed fails due to workmanship within one year of service, we return and correct it at no charge.
