Small-Area Concrete Service

Concrete Walkway, Pad & Step Installation for Residential Properties

Concrete that cracks prematurely, heaves with the freeze-thaw cycle, or crumbles at the edges is almost always a preparation problem โ€” not a material problem. The concrete itself is rarely at fault. What fails is the sub-base that wasn’t compacted, the control joints that weren’t placed, or the forms that weren’t set level.

NorTech handles small-area residential concrete correctly: sub-base graded and compacted before any concrete is placed, forms set level and staked, concrete poured at the right thickness and consolidated without adding excess water, control joints cut or tooled at correct spacing, and surface finished to your specification before the slab is protected for cure. Every step that determines whether concrete lasts 5 years or 30 years.

We cover walkways, entry pads, utility slabs, and exterior steps up to approximately 200 square feet. Written estimate before work begins.

What We Pour

Every Type of Small-Area Concrete We Install

Each concrete project has different dimension requirements, thickness standards, and finishing needs. Here’s what each one involves.

Concrete Walkways

Front entry walks, side yard paths, and garden walkways. Typically 3 to 4 feet wide and poured at 4 inches thick. Broom finish standard for slip resistance. Control joints placed every 6 to 8 feet to manage cracking. Graded for positive drainage away from the home.

4″ thick โ€” broom finish standard

Entry Pads & Stoops

Concrete landing pads at front and back entry doors. Sized to allow comfortable door clearance and safe footing. Poured at 4 inches on compacted sub-base. Pitched slightly away from the foundation to shed water. Often paired with concrete step installation.

Pitched for drainage โ€” foundation setback

Utility Slabs

Concrete pads for HVAC units, generators, pool equipment, trash enclosures, and outdoor fixtures. Poured at 4 to 6 inches depending on the load. Level for equipment stability. Control joints included on larger utility slabs. Sized to manufacturer specifications for the equipment being mounted.

4โ€“6″ thick โ€” equipment sized

Exterior Steps

Entry steps poured with correct riser height (7 to 7.5 inches) and tread depth (minimum 11 inches). Slight forward pitch on treads to shed water. Broom finish on treads for traction. Formed over compacted fill or poured solid depending on height and design.

Code-correct riser & tread โ€” broom tread finish

Mailbox Post Pads

Small concrete pads or collars for mailbox post setting. Poured around the post and crowned to shed water away from the post base โ€” the correct method for preventing wood post rot at grade. Standard residential post setting is included in mailbox installation service.

Crowned for drainage โ€” post-set included

Pergola Post Footings

Individual concrete footings for freestanding pergola, gazebo, and outdoor structure posts. Dug to the correct depth for the structure size and frost line requirements. Poured around the post or with a post anchor set in the concrete. Coordinates with outdoor structure assembly service.

Why Concrete Lasts โ€” Or Doesn’t

What Every Quality Concrete Installation Requires

Concrete failures almost always trace back to one of these steps being skipped. Here’s what we do on every pour.

Sub-Base Preparation

Excavation to the correct depth, removal of organic material, and compaction of the gravel or crushed stone base before any concrete is placed. A soft or uneven base is the number one cause of slab settling and cracking.

Form Setting & Level Check

Wooden or metal forms staked securely at the correct height, checked for level or deliberate drainage pitch, and confirmed for square. Forms determine the final slab dimensions and surface plane.

Correct Pour Thickness

Residential walkways and pads at 4 inches. Utility slabs at 4 to 6 inches depending on load. Steps poured solid or with compacted fill core. Thickness directly determines load capacity and freeze-thaw resistance.

Consolidation Without Excess Water

Concrete struck off and consolidated without adding water to make it easier to work โ€” a common shortcut that weakens the finished slab. Proper mix consistency is maintained from truck to pour.

Control Joint Placement

Joints tooled or cut at correct spacing โ€” approximately equal to 2.5 times the slab thickness in feet โ€” to guide inevitable shrinkage cracking into the joints rather than randomly through the surface.

Surface Finishing & Cure

Broom or smooth finish applied at the correct time in the concrete’s set sequence. Cure protection applied or advised to slow moisture loss during the critical first 24 to 48 hours.

Surface Finish Options

Broom Finish vs. Smooth Finish โ€” Which Is Right for Your Project?

The surface finish affects both the appearance and the slip resistance of the finished slab. Here’s what each option is and where it applies.

Broom Finish

Created by dragging a stiff brush across the surface while the concrete is still workable, leaving fine parallel lines. Provides meaningful slip resistance in wet conditions โ€” important for any outdoor surface exposed to rain.

Standard finish for all walkways, entry pads, steps, and outdoor slabs. The correct choice for any residential exterior concrete that will be walked on.

Standard for all outdoor concrete

Smooth (Trowel) Finish

Created with a steel trowel, producing a flat, dense surface with a slight sheen. Provides a clean, polished appearance but offers less traction when wet than a broom finish.

Appropriate for covered outdoor areas, utility slabs under equipment, and indoor slabs where slip resistance is less critical. Not recommended for open-air walkways or steps.

What Affects the Cost of Concrete Installation?

Concrete is priced based on the scope of work. Here’s what moves the quote up or down.

The primary cost drivers are the total area being poured and the required slab thickness. A 40 sq ft entry pad is significantly less than a 150 sq ft walkway. A 6-inch utility slab requires 50% more concrete material than a 4-inch residential pad of the same area. We quote both material and labor based on actual measured dimensions.

Sites with existing compacted gravel or crushed stone need minimal sub-base work. Soft soil, clay, or sites with significant organic material require more excavation and base material before the pour can proceed. Sub-base conditions are assessed during the on-site quote and factored into the estimate.

Removal of an existing slab before the new pour is a separate line item โ€” not included in the standard installation price. Breaking out and hauling away old concrete adds labor and disposal cost. We assess the existing slab during the quote and provide a separate demo line item if needed.

Concrete work on a driveway-adjacent front walkway with direct truck access is the simplest scenario. Backyard projects requiring concrete to be wheeled through a gate or mixed on-site add time and may affect material options. Site access is assessed during the quote and factored into the labor estimate.

A single two-step entry stoop is a straightforward form-and-pour job. Multi-step entries with landings, curved risers, or integration with an existing retaining wall are more complex. Step count, total height, and whether a landing pad is included all affect the scope and labor time.

Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins.

Based on 1,000+ ratings

“New front walkway from the driveway to the door โ€” about sixty feet. Sub-base prepped properly, control joints placed correctly, and the broom finish is clean and even. Zero cracking after over a year.”

โ€” Eugene T.

“Entry pad and two steps at the back door. Tech confirmed the grade pitched away from the foundation before pouring. Steps have the right riser height and the tread finish has good traction.”

โ€” Norma K.

“HVAC utility pad replaced. Old one had settled and cracked under the unit. New pad is level, properly sized for the equipment footprint, and the concrete is smooth and dense.”

โ€” Alton R.

“Pergola footings poured at the same visit as the structure assembly. Tech dug to the correct depth for our frost line, poured around the post anchors, and let them cure before setting posts.”

โ€” Stella A.

“Side yard walkway with a step down at the gate. Tech formed the step correctly and placed the control joints where you’d expect them. Clean job with no mess left behind.”

โ€” Chester M.

“Old cracked entry pad broken out and a new one poured same day. Demo included in the quote. New pad drains away from the door and looks significantly better than what was there.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Walkway, Pad & Step Concrete Installation โ€” Common Questions

Straight answers on concrete thickness, finishes, cracking, scope, and what to expect.

NorTech pours and finishes concrete walkways, entry pads, utility slabs, and exterior steps for residential properties. Our concrete service covers small-area work up to approximately 200 square feet. Large driveway pours, structural foundations, and projects requiring significant excavation or engineered design fall outside our scope.

Every concrete installation includes site preparation and sub-base compaction, form setting and leveling, concrete mix placement and consolidation, surface finishing in your choice of broom or smooth finish, expansion joint placement to control cracking, and cure time guidance. We do not include demolition of existing concrete โ€” removal of old slabs is quoted separately if needed.

Standard residential concrete walkways and entry pads are poured at 4 inches thick, which is appropriate for foot traffic and light loads. Utility slabs that will support equipment like HVAC units, generators, or heavy planters are typically poured at 4 to 6 inches. Concrete steps are poured solid or with a compacted fill core depending on the height and design. We confirm pour thickness during the on-site quote based on the intended use.

Concrete cracks for several reasons: inadequate sub-base preparation, missing or incorrectly spaced control joints, too much water added to the mix, and freeze-thaw cycles in cold climates. NorTech prevents premature cracking by compacting the sub-base before pouring, placing control joints at correct spacing to guide any cracking into the joints rather than randomly through the slab, and using the correct water-to-cement ratio in the mix.

A broom finish is created by dragging a stiff brush across the surface while the concrete is still wet, leaving fine parallel lines that provide slip resistance. It is the standard finish for outdoor walkways, steps, and pads where traction in wet conditions is important. A smooth finish is created with a steel trowel and produces a flat, polished surface โ€” appropriate for indoor slabs or covered outdoor areas where slip resistance is less critical.

Concrete reaches sufficient strength for foot traffic in approximately 24 to 48 hours under normal conditions. Full cure โ€” where the concrete reaches its design strength โ€” takes 28 days. We advise against heavy loads or vehicle traffic on new residential slabs for at least 7 days. We provide specific cure time guidance based on pour size, weather conditions, and intended use.

Demolition of existing concrete is not included in the standard installation service but can be quoted separately. If an old walkway or pad needs to be broken out before the new pour, we assess the existing slab during the on-site quote and provide a separate demolition line item. In some cases, pouring over existing concrete with a bonding agent is possible โ€” we advise on the best approach based on the condition of the existing slab.

Yes. We form and pour concrete entry steps with correct riser height (typically 7 to 7.5 inches) and tread depth (minimum 11 inches) for safe use. Steps are poured with a slight forward pitch to shed water and prevent pooling. Broom finish is standard on step treads for slip resistance. We assess the existing landing and foundation conditions during the quote.

NorTech handles small-area residential concrete work up to approximately 200 square feet. This covers most walkways, entry pads, utility slabs, and step installations for single-family homes. Large driveway replacements, pool decks, patios over 200 square feet, and any project requiring structural engineering or significant excavation fall outside our scope. If your project exceeds our range, we advise you before any work is scheduled.

Yes. All concrete installations completed by NorTech are covered by our 1-year labor warranty. If significant cracking, heaving, or surface failure occurs due to installation defects within 12 months, we return and assess the issue at no charge. Normal hairline cracks that develop at control joints are expected and are not covered โ€” they indicate the joints are working correctly.
