Gutter Protection & Drainage

Gutter Guard & Downspout Installation That Protects Your Home

Clogged gutters and misdirected downspouts are two of the most common โ€” and most preventable โ€” causes of fascia rot, foundation damage, basement moisture, and landscape erosion. Water that overflows a clogged gutter saturates the soil directly against the foundation. Water that discharges too close to the house does the same thing, slowly and silently, for years.

NorTech installs micro-mesh and surface-tension gutter guards on standard 5-inch and 6-inch K-style gutters, extends or reroutes downspouts to discharge at a safe distance from the foundation, and installs underground discharge lines where surface extensions are impractical. Every guard installation starts with gutter cleaning โ€” we never install guards over debris.

Written estimate before any work begins. Most single-story whole-home guard installations are completed in one visit.

All Services

Every Gutter & Downspout Service We Provide

Gutter protection and drainage management covers more than just guard installation. Here’s the full scope of what we handle.

Gutter Guard Installation

Micro-mesh or surface-tension guards fitted to 5-inch and 6-inch K-style gutters across the full roofline. Includes gutter cleaning before installation and downspout flow test after. Most effective debris prevention system available for standard residential gutters.

Cleaning included

Downspout Extension Installation

Added downspout sections that carry discharge water 4 to 8 feet further from the foundation before releasing. The most affordable fix for downspouts that terminate too close to the home. Available in rigid and flexible extension profiles.

Quick, high-ROI upgrade

Downspout Rerouting

Changing the path of an existing downspout to discharge in a better location โ€” away from window wells, doors, A/C units, or areas with poor drainage. Involves adding elbows, offset sections, and new pipe runs along the home’s exterior.

Custom path planning

Underground Discharge Line

Buried pipe connected to the downspout outlet that carries water underground and discharges it 8 to 15 feet from the foundation โ€” invisible, permanent, and far more effective than surface extensions for long-term foundation protection.

Best long-term solution

Gutter Cleaning

Full gutter cleanout โ€” debris removed by hand and flushed, downspouts cleared and flow-tested. Available as a standalone service or as the first step in every guard installation. Recommended before each fall and spring.

Standalone or pre-guard

Downspout Addition

Adding a new downspout to a gutter run that is too long for a single outlet โ€” causing overflow at the far end even when gutters are clean. Longer gutter runs require downspouts every 30 to 40 feet for adequate drainage capacity.

Overflow prevention
Gutter Guard Types

Which Gutter Guard Type Is Right for Your Home?

We carry two types on every truck. Here’s how they differ, what each handles best, and where each one falls short.

Micro-Mesh Guards

A fine stainless steel or aluminum mesh screen over a solid frame that sits in the gutter. Water passes through the mesh; leaves, pine needles, seed pods, and shingle grit are blocked on top and blow off. The most effective debris-blocking system available. Works in all debris environments including pine needle-heavy yards.

Best for: Most homes โ€” highest debris blocking

Surface-Tension (Reverse Curve)

A curved nose that causes water to follow the curve into the gutter while debris falls away. Works well with large leaf debris but can struggle with fine material like pine needles and seed pods, which may ride the water film into the gutter. Lower profile than mesh systems.

Best for: Large leaf debris, lower debris volume

Foam & Brush Inserts

Foam or bristle inserts that sit inside the gutter and block debris from sitting in the channel. NorTech does not install insert-type guards โ€” they trap debris inside the foam or bristles and become a maintenance problem over time. We only install external guard systems that keep debris outside the gutter entirely.

Why Gutter Protection Matters

What Clogged Gutters and Poor Drainage Actually Cause

The damage from neglected gutters and misdirected downspouts is gradual โ€” but the repair costs are not small. Here’s what’s at stake.

Fascia Rot

Overflowing gutters constantly wet the fascia board behind them, causing wood rot that spreads to rafter tails and eventually requires full fascia replacement.

Foundation Damage

Water pooling against the foundation from overflowing gutters or short downspouts creates hydrostatic pressure that cracks and shifts foundations over years.

Basement Moisture

Saturated soil adjacent to the foundation is the leading cause of basement water infiltration in homes without waterproofing systems.

Landscape Erosion

Concentrated water discharge from uncontrolled downspouts erodes soil, destroys mulch beds, and kills plants directly below the discharge point.

Ice Dams

Clogged gutters trap standing water that freezes in cold climates, creating ice dams that back water under shingles and into the roof structure.

Pest Entry

Wet, debris-filled gutters attract mosquitoes, carpenter ants, and rodents. Overflowing gutters soften fascia and soffits, creating potential pest entry points.

What Affects the Cost of Gutter Guard & Downspout Installation?

Here’s what drives the quote on gutter protection and drainage work.

Guard installation is priced by linear footage of gutter covered. A small home with 120 feet of gutter is significantly less than a large home with 300 feet. We measure the total gutter run during the on-site quote and provide a per-linear-foot breakdown in the written estimate.

Single-story homes are the most accessible and cost-effective to service. Two-story homes require taller ladders, more repositioning time, and may require a two-person crew on steep or high sections. Roof pitch and eave height are assessed during the on-site quote.

Gutters with heavy debris, compacted leaf buildup, or embedded shingle grit take longer to clean thoroughly before guards can be installed. Light to moderate debris is standard. Gutters that have not been cleaned in several years add cleaning time proportional to the buildup.

Simple downspout extensions are quick and low-cost. Rerouting a downspout around a corner or across a wall section takes more time and material. Underground discharge lines require trenching, pipe, and a pop-up emitter at the discharge point โ€” a more involved job quoted separately based on run length and site conditions.

Micro-mesh guards cost more per linear foot than surface-tension guards due to the higher material cost of the stainless mesh. For most homes we recommend micro-mesh for its superior debris blocking. Surface-tension guards are a lower-cost option suited to lower-debris environments. Both are quoted during the on-site visit so you can choose.

Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Downspout & Gutter Guard Installation โ€” Common Questions

Straight answers on guard types, downspout drainage, gutter cleaning, and what to expect.

NorTech installs micro-mesh gutter guards and surface-tension (reverse curve) gutter guards. We carry both types on every truck and fit them to most standard 5-inch and 6-inch K-style gutters as well as half-round profiles. Every installation begins with gutter cleaning so guards are fitted over clear, debris-free gutters.

Yes, when the right type is selected and installed correctly. Micro-mesh guards are the most effective at blocking debris while allowing water flow โ€” the fine stainless steel mesh blocks leaves, pine needles, and seed pods while water passes through. Surface-tension guards work well in areas with larger debris but can struggle with fine material. No gutter guard eliminates maintenance entirely, but quality guards significantly reduce cleaning frequency and prevent clog-related damage.

Yes, always. Installing gutter guards over clogged or debris-filled gutters traps the existing debris inside permanently. NorTech cleans the gutters before every guard installation โ€” debris removed, downspout flow confirmed, and gutters flushed before guards are fitted. Gutter cleaning is included in the guard installation service.

A downspout extension is an added section of downspout pipe that carries water further away from the foundation before it discharges. Extensions are needed when the existing downspout terminates too close to the home โ€” within 4 to 6 feet of the foundation โ€” allowing water to pool and infiltrate the foundation over time. Extensions are one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce basement moisture and foundation hydrostatic pressure.

An underground discharge line connects the downspout to a buried pipe that carries water away from the foundation and discharges it at a safe distance in the yard โ€” typically 8 to 12 feet away or more. Unlike surface extensions that can be tripped over or interfere with landscaping, underground lines are invisible and permanent. They are the best long-term solution for directing roof water away from the foundation.

With quality micro-mesh guards installed correctly, most homes require gutter inspection and cleaning once a year rather than two to four times per year without guards. Homes surrounded by pine trees or high-seed trees may still require more frequent attention due to fine debris accumulation on top of the mesh. Guards reduce maintenance โ€” they do not eliminate it.

NorTech installs guards on standard 5-inch and 6-inch K-style aluminum gutters, which represent the vast majority of residential gutters. We also carry guards for 4-inch half-round gutters. Very old or non-standard gutter profiles may require custom-width guards or may not be compatible with standard systems โ€” this is assessed during the on-site quote.

Gutters that overflow despite being clear are usually undersized for the roof’s drainage area, have insufficient slope toward the downspout, or have too few downspouts for the gutter run length. We assess gutter pitch and downspout capacity during the on-site quote and advise on whether adding a downspout or adjusting slope would resolve the overflow before guards are installed.

A standard single-story home with 150 to 200 linear feet of gutters typically takes 3 to 5 hours for cleaning and guard installation. Two-story homes take longer due to ladder repositioning. Homes with complex rooflines, multiple valleys, or difficult access points are assessed and quoted individually.

Yes. All gutter guard and downspout installations completed by NorTech are covered by our 1-year labor warranty. If a guard section detaches, a downspout extension loosens, or an underground discharge line connection fails due to installation defects within 12 months, we return and correct it at no charge.
