Furniture Painting & Refinishing
The Piece You Almost Replaced β Transformed for a Fraction of the Cost
Solid wood furniture that is structurally sound but visually outdated is one of the best candidates for professional painting or refinishing. A honey oak dresser painted in a soft white, a scratched dining table refinished in a darker walnut stain, or a set of built-in shelves refreshed to match new wall colors β each of these projects delivers a result that looks new without the cost or waste of replacement.
NorTech applies professional spray finishes β not brush-applied latex β for a smooth, durable surface on dressers, tables, entertainment centers, shelving, and built-ins across Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, Charlotte, Nashville, San Antonio, Jacksonville, Denver, Atlanta, and the rest of the country.
Furniture Pieces We Work On
Every Wood Furniture Type β One Crew
NorTech handles all structurally sound wood and wood composite furniture pieces. Here is what is involved for each type.
Dressers & Nightstands
The most common furniture painting request. Drawer fronts, carcass sides, top, and all edges painted. Drawers removed for painting and hardware reinstalled. Most dressers completed in one day.
Dining Tables
The tabletop receives the most wear and is the primary focus. We apply a durable catalyzed topcoat that resists daily contact, moisture, and cleaning products. Legs and apron painted to match.
Built-In Shelving
Wall-mounted shelving and built-in bookcases are painted in place with full masking of surrounding walls and floors. All surfaces β exterior faces, shelf interiors, and trim details β included in scope.
Entertainment Centers
Large wall units and entertainment centers painted in place. Electronics and components removed or masked before work begins. We work carefully around mounting hardware and cable runs.
Desks & Office Furniture
Home office desks, credenzas, and shelving units painted or refinished. Desk surfaces receive the same durable catalyzed topcoat as dining tables β built to withstand daily working contact.
Chairs & Accent Pieces
Wood frame chairs, benches, side tables, and accent pieces. Complex shapes require hand spray application from multiple angles. Hardware and upholstered surfaces fully masked.
Finish Options
Paint or Stain β Your Choice
Two core finish approaches for wood furniture. Each requires a different prep sequence and product system.
Furniture Painting
A solid color finish in any paint color β from crisp white to deep navy. Applied by spray for a smooth, brush-mark-free surface.
- Surface cleaned, deglossed, and primed
- Waterborne alkyd or catalyzed finish system
- Spray-applied for a smooth, uniform surface
- Two finish coats β full coverage
- Durable topcoat β satin or semi-gloss
- Hardware removed and reinstalled
Furniture Staining & Refinishing
Strip the existing finish, apply a new stain color, and topcoat β the wood grain visible, the color updated.
- Existing finish stripped or sanded to bare wood
- Wood conditioned and stain-prepped
- New stain color applied and wiped
- Multiple topcoat options β matte, satin, gloss
- Solid wood pieces only
- Hardware removed and reinstalled
Our Process
How NorTech Paints Furniture
Four steps from worn or outdated finish to a smooth, durable painted surface on every piece.
Clean & Prep
All surfaces cleaned and degreased. Drawers and doors removed where applicable. Hardware removed and set aside. Adjacent floors and walls masked before any product is applied.
Sand & Degloss
Existing finish sanded to remove gloss and create mechanical adhesion for the new coating. Repairs made to any chips, dents, or damaged areas before priming.
Prime
Bonding primer applied to ensure adhesion β particularly important on laminate, MDF, and previously painted surfaces. Stain-blocking primer used when covering dark existing colors.
Spray Finish & Topcoat
Two finish coats applied by spray for a smooth, uniform surface free of brush marks. Durable topcoat applied last for protection against daily use. Hardware reinstalled after cure.
Common Situations
Furniture Painting Situations We Handle Every Day
Every furniture piece comes in with its own history. These are the six situations our crews encounter most often.
Outdated Oak or Pine Finish
Honey oak and natural pine were the dominant furniture finishes for decades. Painting them in white, gray, or navy gives a completely modern result on pieces that are structurally excellent and worth keeping.
Scratched or Worn Tabletop
Dining table tops accumulate scratches, water rings, and worn patches from daily use. The top is sanded back, refinished or repainted, and topcoated with a durable catalyzed finish that holds up to real use.
Laminate Furniture
Laminate and MDF furniture can be painted but requires a bonding primer specifically formulated for non-porous surfaces. Standard primer will not adhere to laminate β this is the most common reason DIY furniture painting fails.
Mismatched Furniture Set
A bedroom set or dining set where one piece has been replaced or refinished differently from the rest can be unified by painting all pieces to the same color and finish β creating a coordinated look without buying new.
Built-Ins That Don’t Match New Wall Color
Built-in shelving or entertainment centers painted years ago in a color that no longer coordinates with updated walls are one of the most common furniture refresh requests β and one of the fastest to complete.
Antique or Heirloom Piece
Solid wood antique pieces that are structurally sound but showing wear deserve professional refinishing β not replacement. We assess the piece during the estimate and confirm whether paint or stain refinishing is the right approach.

“Dining table refinished from a worn light oak to a deep espresso. The tabletop is perfectly smooth and the topcoat has held up to daily family use for eight months. Best decision we made for the dining room.”
“Built-in shelves painted white to match new wall color. They masked everything meticulously and the color match to the trim is exact. A few hours of work that made the whole room look intentional.”
“Entertainment center painted navy β it’s the focal point of the whole living room now. They worked around all the cables and mounting hardware without any drips on the walls. Impressive precision work.”
“Full bedroom set β dresser, two nightstands, and the bed frame β all painted the same antique white. They used the same batch of paint across every piece so the color is perfectly consistent. Looks like a matched set.”
“Laminate dresser from IKEA painted β I was told by another contractor that laminate can’t be painted. NorTech used the correct bonding primer and the finish has held for over a year with zero peeling.”
