Trim & Baseboard Painting
Fresh Walls Mean Nothing if the Trim Looks Tired
Trim and baseboards take more physical abuse than any other painted surface in the home β kicked, scuffed, cleaned repeatedly, and knocked by furniture. They yellow over time, collect grime in the profile details, and chip along the top edge where the baseboard meets the wall. When the trim looks bad, the whole room looks unfinished regardless of how good the wall color is.
NorTech painters handle trim in Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, Charlotte, Nashville, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Denver, Columbus, San Diego, and everywhere across the country β painting trim as part of a full room project or as a standalone service with the same precision standard either way.
Trim Surfaces We Paint
Every Trim Surface β One Crew
NorTech paints all interior trim surfaces. Here is what each one involves and why the approach differs.
Baseboards
The highest-traffic trim surface in the home. We tape the floor, caulk the top edge at the wall, and apply two coats of semi-gloss. Chips and scuffs along the face are filled before painting.
Door Casings & Frames
Door casings require cutting-in at both the wall and the door face. We tape carefully at all edges and hand-cut where tape cannot reach. Both sides of every door frame are included in scope.
Window Trim
Sill, apron, side casings, and head casing painted as one scope. We mask the glass and any factory-painted sash to avoid overspray on surfaces that should not be painted.
Crown Molding
Crown requires masking at both ceiling and wall lines and steady hand work along the profile. Painted in the same color as the rest of the trim or in a contrasting ceiling white if requested.
Chair Rail
Painted as part of the trim package in the same semi-gloss finish as the baseboards for a unified result throughout the room.
Wainscoting & Paneling
Wainscoting panels, board and batten, and wall paneling require careful masking at the top cap and clean cut-in along all grooves and edges. Full panel face and all profile detail painted.
Sequencing
Trim First or Walls First β It Depends on the Project
The order in which trim and walls are painted determines which edges are taped and which are cut in freehand. NorTech plans the sequence before every job.
Full Room Repaint
Trim Painted First
When painting both walls and trim, we paint the trim first and let it dry. Then we cut the walls in against the dried trim β producing cleaner wall edges than taping over a fresh trim coat.
Trim Only
Walls Taped Carefully
When painting trim in a room with existing wall paint that will not be touched, we tape the wall carefully along every trim edge and hand-cut where tape cannot reach a clean line.
Our Process
How NorTech Paints Trim & Baseboards
Five steps from scuffed, yellowed trim to a crisp, durable finished surface.
Protect & Mask
Floors taped along the baseboard toe. Walls taped at trim edges for trim-only projects. Fixtures and hardware masked where needed.
Fill & Sand
Chips, dents, and nail holes in all trim surfaces filled with lightweight spackle and sanded smooth. All edges inspected for gaps before caulking.
Caulk All Gaps
Every gap between baseboard and wall, between trim pieces, and at door and window frame edges caulked with paintable caulk and tooled smooth before painting begins.
Prime Where Needed
Bare wood, repaired areas, and stained sections primed before the finish coat. Previously painted trim in good condition goes directly to finish coats.
Apply Finish Coats
Two coats of semi-gloss applied by brush for full coverage and a smooth, durable surface. Edges cut-in by hand at all wall and floor lines.
Common Situations
Trim Painting Situations We Handle Every Day
Every home’s trim comes in with its own history. These are the six situations our crews encounter most often.
Yellowed or Dingy White Trim
White trim yellows from UV exposure, cleaning products, and age. A fresh coat of semi-gloss returns trim to a clean, bright white that makes the whole room feel newer.
Chipped Baseboard Edges
The top front edge of a baseboard chips first from vacuums, furniture, and foot traffic. We fill all chips, sand smooth, and prime before the finish coat β the repair is invisible.
Gaps Between Baseboard and Wall
Settlement gaps and seasonal movement leave visible gaps between baseboards and walls. Caulking these before painting gives professional trim its flat-against-the-wall appearance.
Paint Buildup on Profile Details
Previous heavy coats fill in profile details and make trim look crude. We address buildup with light sanding before applying a thinner, more controlled finish coat.
Changing Trim Color
Going from a colored trim to white, or vice versa, requires careful priming to prevent bleed-through and full coverage to eliminate any ghost of the previous color.
New Construction Trim
Factory-primed new construction trim still requires caulking all joints and a minimum of two finish coats for full coverage on the raw factory prime surface.

What Homeowners Say About NorTech Trim Painters
Real reviews from customers across our service areas.
“Trim and baseboards throughout the entire house β yellowed and chipped. NorTech did the whole home in two days. Every room looks brand new. The caulking at the baseboard-wall joints is perfect.”
“Had them do trim-only in three rooms after I painted the walls myself. They taped carefully, cut in precisely, and left zero bleed on my wall color. You can barely tell it was two separate jobs.”
“Crown molding throughout the main floor β done without a drip on the ceiling or walls. The profile edges are clean. Took a full day but the result is worth every minute.”
“New construction β they caulked every joint before painting and the trim looks factory-installed. The builder left gaps everywhere. NorTech fixed them all and the finish is flawless.”
“Baseboards, door casings, window trim, and crown β whole home package. They sequenced trim first so walls could be cut in against dry trim. Sharpest edges I’ve seen on a paint job.”
“Good work on the wainscoting in the dining room. Every groove and profile detail painted cleanly. The top cap at the chair rail is level and sharp. Minor wait for scheduling but worth it.”
Common Questions
Trim & Baseboard Painting β Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to what homeowners ask most before booking a trim painting service.
Trim and baseboard painting cost depends on the linear footage of trim, the number of door casings and window frames, whether crown molding is included, and the condition of the existing finish. NorTech provides a written upfront estimate before any work begins.
When painting an entire room, NorTech paints trim first, then cuts in the walls against the dried trim. This produces cleaner edges than taping over walls. When painting trim only with existing wall paint, we tape the walls carefully and hand-cut each edge.
Semi-gloss is the standard for trim, baseboards, door casings, and window frames β durable, wipeable, and moisture resistant. Satin is an alternative for trim in low-traffic areas where a softer sheen is preferred.
Yes. Trim-only painting is one of our most common standalone services. We tape the existing wall paint carefully and apply two finish coats to all trim surfaces. Most trim-only projects for a standard home are completed in one day.
Yes. NorTech caulks all gaps between trim and walls before painting. Proper caulking fills hairline gaps that make trim look unfinished and prevents paint from cracking at joint lines over time.
Trim and baseboard painting for a standard 3-bedroom home typically takes one to two days depending on the amount of trim, number of doors and windows, and whether crown molding is included. We provide a linear footage count and timeline in your written estimate.
Yes. Crown molding requires careful masking at both ceiling and wall lines and steady hand work along the profile edges. NorTech includes crown molding in full trim packages and as a standalone service.
