Hardware Guide

Door Hardware Types NorTech Installs

Door hardware is function-specific โ€” the right hardware for a front entry door is different from what belongs on a bathroom or closet. NorTech installs every residential hardware type and advises on the correct function for each location.

Passage Hardware

No locking function โ€” the door latches but does not lock from either side. Used for hallways, closets, and any door where privacy is not required. Available in knob and lever styles in every finish. The most straightforward hardware installation with the fewest variables.

Hallways Closets Pantries

Privacy Hardware

Locks from the inside with a push button or turn piece โ€” no key required. Has an emergency release on the outside for access if someone is locked in. The correct hardware for bathrooms and bedrooms. Installing keyed hardware on a bathroom is a safety hazard โ€” privacy hardware is the right specification.

Bathrooms Bedrooms Home offices

Keyed Entry Hardware

Requires a key from the outside and a thumb turn from the inside. The standard for exterior entry doors and any interior door requiring true security โ€” home offices, storage rooms, or rental unit doors. Deadbolts are typically installed alongside keyed entry knobs or levers for a complete entry security package.

Entry doors Secure rooms Rental units

Deadbolts

Single cylinder deadbolts key from outside, turn from inside โ€” the standard residential deadbolt. Double cylinder deadbolts key from both sides โ€” used on doors with glass panels where a burglar could break the glass and reach a thumb turn. NorTech installs both types and advises on the appropriate specification for each door location.

Entry doors Security upgrade All exterior doors

Smart Locks

Keypad, fingerprint, app-controlled, and voice-integrated locks that replace or supplement traditional keyed hardware. NorTech installs smart locks from Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, August, and other major brands โ€” including network pairing, app setup, and full functionality testing. Installation requires the door to be properly aligned for the lock to operate correctly.

Barn Door & Specialty Hardware

Pull handles, flush pulls, and edge pulls for barn doors, pocket doors, and sliding door systems that don’t use standard bored hardware. These require surface mounting rather than bore installation and must be positioned for comfortable use at the correct door height and edge distance.

Function by Location

The Right Hardware for Every Door in Your Home

Hardware function must match the door location. Installing the wrong type โ€” keyed hardware on a bathroom, passage hardware on an entry โ€” creates safety issues and security gaps. NorTech specifies the correct hardware before installation begins.

Front & Entry Doors

Keyed entry lever or knob plus a deadbolt is the standard entry package. Smart locks replace the keyed cylinder while maintaining the deadbolt function. Entry hardware takes the most use of any hardware in the home โ€” grade and finish selection should reflect that.

Bathroom Doors

Privacy hardware only โ€” never keyed, never passage. The emergency release on the outside of privacy hardware is a safety requirement, not an option. NorTech will not install keyed hardware on a bathroom door and will advise homeowners who request it on why privacy hardware is the correct specification.

Bedroom Doors

Privacy hardware is standard for bedrooms. Passage hardware is acceptable in children’s rooms where locking is not desired. Keyed hardware is occasionally requested for specific security situations โ€” NorTech installs what is specified while advising on emergency egress considerations.

Closet & Hallway Doors

Passage hardware โ€” no locking required. The focus is on finish consistency with adjacent hardware throughout the home. Replacing all passage hardware in a renovation to a consistent finish is one of the most cost-effective hardware upgrades available.

After Door Replacement

New door replacements almost always require new hardware โ€” old hardware rarely transfers cleanly to a new door due to bore size differences, finish mismatch, or wear. NorTech installs hardware as a companion service to door replacement in the same appointment.

Whole-Home Hardware Upgrade

Replacing all interior hardware to a consistent finish โ€” brushed nickel, matte black, satin brass โ€” is a renovation-level upgrade that significantly changes the visual quality of a home’s interior. NorTech handles whole-home hardware replacement in one or two coordinated appointments.

Diagnose the Issue

Common Door Hardware Problems That Need Attention

Most door hardware problems are either installation errors or normal wear that has reached the end of the hardware’s service life. These are the most common issues NorTech diagnoses and corrects.

Lock Won’t Turn Smoothly

A stiff or binding lock is usually caused by a misaligned strike plate, worn internal mechanism, or a door that has shifted in the frame. The latch bolt is dragging against the strike plate instead of entering it cleanly. Strike plate repositioning solves most cases without replacing the lock.

Door Won’t Latch Without Force

When the latch bolt doesn’t engage the strike plate without pushing the door, the strike plate has shifted or the door has expanded. The strike plate hole needs to be enlarged or relocated โ€” or the door stop adjusted โ€” so the latch engages on contact rather than requiring force.

Loose or Wobbly Knob

A knob that wobbles or spins without engaging the latch has a failed set screw or worn spindle connection. In most cases the knob can be tightened or the spindle replaced without replacing the entire lockset. If the mechanism itself is worn, full hardware replacement is the cleaner fix.

Smart Lock Won’t Connect

Smart lock connectivity failures are usually a network or app configuration issue rather than a hardware defect โ€” incorrect Wi-Fi band, Bluetooth range limitations, or app version conflicts. NorTech technicians troubleshoot the full installation including network pairing, not just the physical mounting.

Wrong Hardware Function

Passage hardware installed on a bathroom, or a keyed lock where privacy hardware should be โ€” both are common installation errors in new construction and renovation. Replacing the hardware with the correct function type is a straightforward swap that eliminates the safety or usability issue.

Mismatched Hardware Finish

A house where door hardware is a mix of brass, chrome, nickel, and black โ€” accumulated over years of individual replacements โ€” is one of the most visible signs of deferred maintenance. A whole-home hardware replacement to a single consistent finish is one of the highest-return cosmetic upgrades available per dollar spent.

Replaced all interior hardware throughout the house โ€” twelve doors, all matte black levers. Every latch engages cleanly, every door closes with the same feel. The consistency alone makes the whole interior look more intentional.

Sylvester O.

Smart lock installed on the front door and side entry. Both are connected, both work with the app, and the technician stayed until everything was confirmed working โ€” including walking me through the app setup. That level of follow-through was not expected.

Philippa C.

Had a stiff deadbolt that required two hands to lock. NorTech repositioned the strike plate by about an eighth of an inch and the deadbolt now throws with one finger. Simple fix but the previous two people I called just said to replace the lock.

Ambrose K.

New hardware installed on all five doors after we replaced the interior doors. Technician confirmed the function type for each location before installing โ€” caught that the previous contractor had specified keyed hardware for the master bathroom. That kind of attention matters.

Beatrice N.

Deadbolts on all three exterior doors plus a smart lock on the front. All installed in one visit. The smart lock is solid in the door โ€” no play, no wobble โ€” and the deadbolt throw is smooth. Good hardware properly installed makes a real difference.

Leopold R.

Barn door pull hardware on three doors. Surface mounted, positioned correctly, and secured solidly. The pulls are centered at the right height and the screws are flush โ€” small details that previous installers have missed on barn door hardware specifically.

Yes. NorTech installs smart locks from major brands including Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, August, and others. Installation includes mounting the hardware, configuring the lock to the door, and connecting it to your home network or app where applicable. We test all functionality before leaving.

Passage hardware has no locking mechanism โ€” it latches but does not lock, used for hallways and closets. Privacy hardware locks from the inside with a push button or turn piece and has an emergency release on the outside, used for bathrooms and bedrooms. Keyed entry hardware requires a key from the outside and a thumb turn from the inside, used for entry doors and rooms requiring security.

Yes. NorTech technicians can bore new holes for hardware on doors that do not have existing bore holes. This includes drilling the latch bore and cross bore to the correct diameter and backset for the hardware being installed.

Standard knob or lever installation on a pre-bored door typically takes 15 to 30 minutes per door. Deadbolt installation adds similar time. Smart lock installation takes 30 to 60 minutes per door depending on the brand and connectivity setup. Multiple doors in one visit are more efficient overall.

Both options are available. NorTech carries common door hardware on the truck for standard installations. You may also purchase your own hardware โ€” any brand, any finish โ€” and NorTech technicians will install what you supply. Specify your preference when booking.

Yes. Stiff or binding locks are usually caused by a misaligned strike plate, worn internal mechanism, or a door that has shifted in the frame. NorTech diagnoses the cause before recommending repair or replacement โ€” many stiff lock issues are corrected without replacing the hardware.

Yes. All NorTech door handle and lock installation labor is covered by a 1-year labor warranty. If any installation we performed fails due to workmanship within one year of service, we return and correct it at no charge.
