Material Options

Accent Wall Materials NorTech Installs

The material defines the character of the accent wall. Each option has a different visual weight, installation method, and finishing requirement. NorTech installs every major residential accent wall material.

Shiplap

Horizontal boards with a small reveal gap at each course — the shadow line between boards is what creates the signature shiplap look. Most commonly installed in white-painted pine or MDF, but also available in natural wood finishes. Level installation is critical — any drift in the first few courses compounds visibly across the wall.

Bedrooms Living rooms Bathrooms

Slat Wood Panels

Narrow vertical or horizontal wood slats — typically oak, walnut, or pine veneer — mounted on a felt or MDF backing panel. Installed as full panels rather than individual boards for efficiency. The three-dimensional texture catches light differently throughout the day, making slat panels one of the most visually dynamic accent wall options available.

Modern interiors Home offices Feature walls

Board & Batten

Vertical boards with narrow battens covering seams — installed full-height or to chair rail height. At full wall height, board and batten creates a strong vertical line that makes rooms feel taller. The spacing of the boards must be planned to the wall width before installation so the layout is symmetrical.

Entryways Dining rooms Bedrooms

Brick Veneer

Thin brick slices or cast faux brick panels that replicate the look of an exposed brick wall without the structural requirements. Real brick veneer is heavier and requires proper adhesive and mechanical fastening into studs. Cast panels are lighter but less authentic in appearance. Both are available — NorTech advises on the right choice based on wall structure and budget.

Kitchens Living rooms Industrial style

Full-Height Wood Paneling

Large format wood panels — plywood, MDF with applied profiles, or solid wood — installed floor to ceiling. Full-height paneling creates a completely transformed wall surface and is the most architectural of the accent wall options. Requires careful planning for seam placement, outlet routing, and crown molding integration at the ceiling.

Home offices Libraries Primary bedrooms

Geometric & 3D Panels

Decorative MDF or PVC panels with routed geometric patterns — hexagons, diamonds, waves, and abstract textures — that create a sculptural wall surface. Installed as individual tiles or full panels. Pattern alignment across the wall must be planned from the center out so the layout is balanced at both edges.

Where We Install

Accent Wall Applications by Room

An accent wall works in any room where one surface deserves more visual weight than the others. These are the most common applications NorTech installs and what makes each one distinct.

Behind the Bed

The headboard wall is the most searched accent wall application. Shiplap, slat panels, and board and batten all work well here. The wall should extend the full width of the headboard plus breathing room on both sides — a wall that stops where the nightstands end looks underscaled.

Living Room Feature Wall

The wall behind the TV or fireplace is the natural focal point of most living rooms. Shiplap and slat panels frame a TV or fireplace without competing with it visually. The material should be chosen with the existing furniture scale and room color palette in mind.

Entryway & Foyer

The first wall a guest sees when entering the home. Full-height board and batten or shiplap in the entry creates an immediate architectural statement. Material durability matters here — entryways take more impact than other rooms and the accent wall material should hold up to daily contact.

Home Office

Slat wood panels and full-height paneling are increasingly popular in home office applications — the texture adds visual interest to video calls and the architectural quality signals a serious workspace. NorTech routes all cable management cutouts as part of the installation.

Dining Room

Board and batten and picture frame paneling in dining rooms add the formal quality that paint alone cannot achieve. The scale of the panel spacing should be proportional to the room size — tight spacing works in smaller rooms, wider spacing in larger dining rooms with higher ceilings.

Bathroom

Shiplap in bathrooms requires moisture-resistant material — PVC shiplap or properly sealed and primed MDF. Real wood shiplap is not recommended in bathrooms without a vapor barrier and thorough sealing. NorTech advises on material selection for bathroom applications before any work begins.

Diagnose the Issue

Common Accent Wall Problems That Come From Poor Installation

Most accent wall failures are visible within days of installation — boards that drift, panels that separate, and cutouts that don’t fit. These are the most common issues NorTech corrects.

Boards Drifting Out of Level

Horizontal shiplap that is not level drifts visibly across the wall — the gap between boards widens on one side as the boards follow the unlevel starting course. Every course should be checked with a level, not just assumed to be straight because the previous board looked level.

Panels Separating from the Wall

Slat panels and heavy accent wall materials that were adhesive-mounted without mechanical fasteners into studs pull away from the wall over time — particularly in rooms with temperature swings. All panels should be both adhesive-bonded and nail-fastened into studs for long-term stability.

Uneven Board Spacing

Board and batten with inconsistent spacing between vertical boards — where some gaps are wider than others — comes from installing without planning the full wall layout first. Spacing should be calculated mathematically from the wall width before the first board is cut, not eyeballed and adjusted as you go.

Outlets Not Flush

Outlet covers that sit forward of the accent wall surface or have visible gaps around the cutout indicate the wall material thickness wasn’t accounted for. Electrical boxes may need to be extended when adding wall material thickness — this is assessed before installation and handled as part of the project.

Visible Gaps at Corners

Inside corner gaps in shiplap and panel installations come from walls that are out of plumb. The last board on a wall must be scribed to the adjacent wall surface — not cut square and left with a gap. Caulk alone is not an adequate substitute for a scribed fit.

Asymmetric Layout

A board and batten or slat panel wall where the end panels on each side of the wall are different widths — because installation started at one edge instead of the center — looks unbalanced. The layout must be centered on the wall before installation begins, with equal-width panels on both sides.

Slat wood panels behind the bed — full wall, floor to ceiling. The panels are centered on the wall so both sides are equal. The outlet cutout is clean and the cover plate sits flush. It looks like a professional design decision, not an afterthought.

Shiplap in the living room behind the TV. Every board is level — I checked with my own level after the installer left and there’s zero drift across the whole wall. They also routed the TV cable hole exactly where I asked for it.

Dominic F.

Board and batten in the entryway, full height. They calculated the spacing before installing anything — I could see the layout marked on the wall before a single board went up. The result is perfectly even from both ends of the wall.

Tabitha O.

Brick veneer in the kitchen. Heavy material, properly anchored into every stud. The grout joints are consistent and the corners wrap correctly. Several people have asked if it’s real brick — that’s the test for whether this type of installation worked.

Leander K.

Full-height wood paneling in the home office — three walls. The seams fall behind the bookshelf placement we planned together. The crown molding at the top integrates with the paneling cleanly. Best upgrade we’ve done to this house.

Claudette B.

Had shiplap removed from the bathroom — previous install used regular pine that had swollen from moisture. NorTech removed it cleanly, repaired the drywall, and installed PVC shiplap properly sealed this time. No sign of the previous damage.

Common Questions

Accent Wall Installation — Frequently Asked Questions

Questions customers ask before booking accent wall installation with NorTech.

Accent wall installation costs vary based on material type, wall dimensions, pattern or layout complexity, and whether outlets and switches need to be accommodated. NorTech provides upfront estimates before any work begins. Request a free quote for a project-specific price.

Most accent wall installations are completed in one day. Larger walls, complex layouts, brick veneer, or walls with many obstacles like windows and outlets may take longer. Your technician will provide a timeline based on the specific scope.

It depends on the material and desired finish. Raw wood shiplap and MDF board and batten typically need to be painted. Pre-finished slat wood panels and stained shiplap may not require additional finishing. NorTech installs accent wall materials to a ready-to-finish state — nail holes filled, gaps caulked, and surfaces prepped for paint or stain.

Yes. Accent wall installation around electrical outlets, switches, and light fixtures requires precise cutouts so cover plates sit flush against the finished surface. NorTech technicians handle all electrical obstacle cutouts as part of the installation.

Shiplap is a flat horizontal board with a small reveal gap between each course — creating a subtle shadow line across the wall. Slat wood panels are narrow vertical or horizontal strips, often pre-mounted on a backing panel, that create a more pronounced three-dimensional texture. Slat panels are typically installed as full panels rather than individual boards.

Yes. Accent walls are installed in virtually any room. Material selection should account for the room environment — moisture-resistant materials for bathrooms, appropriate weight for the wall structure, and material that accepts the desired finish. NorTech advises on material suitability for each application.

Yes. Heavy accent wall materials — brick veneer, thick wood panels, and slat systems — must be anchored into studs. Lighter materials like peel-and-stick panels or thin shiplap may be adhesive-mounted but should still be mechanically fastened at stud locations for long-term stability. NorTech locates studs before installation on every project.

Yes. All NorTech accent wall installation labor is covered by a 1-year labor warranty. If any installation we performed fails due to workmanship within one year of service, we return and correct it at no charge.
