Closet Types

Closet Systems NorTech Installs

Every closet type has different spatial constraints and storage demands. NorTech installs systems for all of them โ€” configured to fit the actual dimensions and actual use of each space.

Walk-In Closets

The most versatile closet space in a home. Walk-in closet systems typically combine multiple hanging zones, shelving sections, and drawer units along two or three walls. Configuration planning before installation is essential to avoid dead corners and wasted vertical space.

Primary bedroom Guest room Multi-wall layouts

Reach-In Closets

The standard bedroom closet โ€” typically 24 to 30 inches deep and 4 to 8 feet wide. Most reach-in closets are significantly underutilized with just a single rod and shelf. A properly configured system with double hanging, shelving towers, and shoe storage can triple the usable capacity of the same space.

Bedrooms Hallways Entry closets

Wardrobe & Armoire Systems

Freestanding wardrobe units โ€” including IKEA PAX and similar flat-pack systems โ€” assembled and wall-anchored for safety. Freestanding wardrobes must be secured to the wall to prevent tipping, particularly in homes with children. NorTech handles full assembly and anchoring.

No built-in closets Rental units Additions

Pantry & Kitchen Storage

Pantry shelving systems configured for food storage, small appliance organization, and bulk item access. Adjustable shelf heights are essential in pantry applications โ€” fixed spacing rarely accommodates the range of items stored. NorTech installs adjustable systems that can be reconfigured as needs change.

Kitchen pantry Utility rooms Garage storage

Linen Closets

Narrow linen closets benefit most from full-height adjustable shelving that uses every inch of depth and vertical space. Standard installations leave the top third of the closet unused โ€” NorTech configures systems that reach the ceiling and make the full depth of each shelf accessible.

Hallways Bathrooms Laundry rooms

Mudroom & Entry Storage

Entryway storage systems โ€” cubbies, hooks, bench seating with storage below, and overhead shelving โ€” installed to handle daily use by the whole household. These systems take significant physical abuse and must be anchored correctly to hold up over time.

System Components

What Goes Into a Custom Closet System

A well-designed closet system is built from components that work together. NorTech installs all of these elements and configures each one for the specific storage demands of your space.

Shelving

Fixed and adjustable shelves in melamine, solid wood, wire, or laminate. Shelf depth, spacing, and load rating are matched to the items being stored. Heavy storage like folded denim or shoes requires different shelf support than light linen storage.

Hanging Rods

Single hang for long items like dresses and suits, double hang for shirts and jackets. Rod placement height is adjusted for the user โ€” not installed at a generic default height. Oval rods are installed where sliding hangers are a priority.

Drawer Units

Drawer towers for folded items, accessories, and undergarments built into the system layout. Full-extension drawer slides are installed so the entire drawer depth is accessible. Soft-close hardware is available on compatible systems.

Shoe Storage

Angled shoe shelves, flat shoe shelves, and cubbies configured for the number and type of shoes being stored. Shoe storage is one of the most commonly underplanned elements in a closet โ€” NorTech accounts for it in the initial layout.

Vertical Panels & Standards

The structural backbone of any closet system. Vertical panels and shelf standards are anchored into studs or with rated wall anchors โ€” never just into drywall. Load-bearing components get structural fasteners regardless of the system brand.

Accessories & Add-Ons

Hooks, valet rods, tie and belt racks, pull-out hampers, and jewelry organizers installed within the system layout. These items are configured at ergonomic heights and positioned so they don’t conflict with hanging garments or drawer operation.

Diagnose the Issue

Common Closet Problems That Need Professional Repair

Most closet failures trace back to how the system was anchored โ€” or wasn’t. These are the problems NorTech sees most often in existing closet installations.

Sagging Shelves

Shelves that bow in the middle are either overloaded, undersupported, or made from material that is not rated for the load being placed on them. Adding intermediate brackets or replacing the shelf material with a thicker or stronger option corrects the sag and prevents failure.

Anchors Pulling Out of the Wall

The most common closet failure โ€” wall anchors installed into drywall without hitting a stud pulling free under load. The fix is removing the system, locating studs, adding blocking if needed, and reinstalling with structural fasteners. Drywall anchors alone are not adequate for loaded closet systems.

Hanging Rod Collapsing

A closet rod that bends or pulls its brackets from the wall was either too long without a center support, too thin for the load, or bracket-mounted into drywall only. Center supports and stud-anchored brackets are required for any rod span over 48 inches under load.

Drawers That Stick or Fall Off Track

Drawer slides in closet systems wear out faster than kitchen drawers because of heavier, bulkier items. Slide replacement is a straightforward repair โ€” the drawer is removed, old slides are unscrewed, and new full-extension slides are installed and adjusted.

Wire Shelving That Isn’t Working

Builder-grade wire shelving is functional but has real limitations โ€” items fall through, shoes tip, and the single-rod setup wastes most of the vertical space. Replacing wire shelving with a solid system is one of the highest-impact closet upgrades with immediate daily benefit.

System Not Fitting the Space

Modular closet systems purchased and installed without measuring for the actual wall dimensions result in gaps, overhangs, and components that don’t fit together correctly. NorTech measures before any components are ordered or installed and adjusts the configuration to fit the real space.

Walk-in closet in the primary bedroom โ€” three walls, double hang on one side, shelving tower in the middle, shoe shelves along the back. The technician measured everything first and adjusted the configuration so the corner space actually works. It’s completely transformed how I use the room.

Brianna K.

IKEA PAX wardrobe assembled and wall-anchored in the guest room. They had it together and secured in a few hours. I had another installer quit halfway through the assembly โ€” NorTech finished the job cleanly without any complaints about the complexity.

Ezra M.

Replaced the wire shelving in all three bedroom closets with modular systems. The difference is significant โ€” more usable space, everything is accessible, and nothing is tipping or falling through the shelves. Should have done it years ago.

Odessa R.

Pantry shelving in a very awkward angled space. The technician cut shelves to fit the angles rather than just doing what was easy. Every inch of the pantry is now usable. Good problem solving on a non-standard job.

Ramona G.

Had a closet system that was pulling off the wall โ€” the previous installer hadn’t hit a single stud. NorTech located all the studs, added blocking where needed, and reinstalled the whole system properly. It’s been solid for months since.

Winston F.

Mudroom storage system with hooks, cubbies, and a bench. Everything is anchored solidly and the heights are right for our household. Takes the chaos out of the back entry. Scheduling was easy and the technician showed up on time.

Common Questions

Custom Closet Installation โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

Questions customers ask before booking closet installation with NorTech.

Custom closet installation costs vary based on closet size, system type, number of components, and whether existing shelving needs to be removed. NorTech provides upfront estimates before any work begins. Request a free quote for a project-specific price.

Both options are available. You can purchase a closet system from any supplier โ€” IKEA, The Container Store, Closet Factory, or a home improvement store โ€” and NorTech handles installation. NorTech can also source systems for many projects. Ask when you request your quote.

Yes. Existing wire shelving, shelf standards, or built-in components can be removed as part of the project scope. Removal includes patching screw holes and preparing the wall surface for the new system installation.

NorTech locates wall studs before installation and secures all vertical panels, shelf standards, and hanging rails directly into studs or with appropriate wall anchors rated for the load. Shelving secured only into drywall without anchoring to studs or blocking will fail under the weight of a full closet.

A standard reach-in closet system installation typically takes two to four hours. Walk-in closet systems with multiple sections, drawers, and hanging configurations may take a full day. Your technician will provide a timeline based on the scope and system complexity.

Yes. NorTech installs IKEA PAX wardrobes, IKEA ALGOT systems, and similar flat-pack closet systems from any supplier. We handle assembly, wall anchoring, and configuration adjustment. You supply the system and we handle the installation.

Yes. NorTech technicians measure the closet before installation and configure the system components โ€” shelf heights, hanging rod positions, and drawer placement โ€” based on your storage needs and the dimensions of the space. Systems are adjusted to fit the actual space, not just placed as-is from the box.

Yes. All NorTech custom closet installation labor is covered by a 1-year labor warranty. If any installation we performed fails due to workmanship within one year of service, we return and correct it at no charge.
