Material Guide

Types of Tile NorTech Installs

Tile is not one-size-fits-all. Material choice affects durability, maintenance, slip resistance, and how long the installation holds up in a given space. Here’s what we work with and where each performs best.

Ceramic Tile

The most affordable tile option โ€” durable in low-to-moderate traffic areas and available in the widest range of sizes, colors, and finishes. Not as dense as porcelain, so best suited for walls and dry-area floors.

Bathroom walls Backsplash Low-traffic floors

Porcelain Tile

Denser, harder, and less porous than ceramic โ€” porcelain is the standard for high-traffic floors, wet areas, and outdoor-to-indoor transitions. Frost-resistant and highly stain-resistant when properly installed.

Bathroom floors Showers Kitchen floors

Natural Stone

Marble, travertine, slate, and limestone bring unique visual character to any space. Each slab is different. Natural stone requires sealing before and after grouting and is more demanding to maintain than ceramic or porcelain.

Primary bathrooms Entryways Feature walls

Subway & Metro Tile

Classic rectangular tiles in ceramic or glazed porcelain โ€” the most common tile used in kitchens and bathrooms. The variation comes in the layout: straight stack, offset, herringbone, or vertical. All patterns available.

Kitchen backsplash Shower walls Bathroom walls

Mosaic Tile

Small format tiles โ€” glass, ceramic, stone, or mixed material โ€” mounted on mesh backing for efficient installation. Used for decorative accents, shower niches, feature walls, and bathroom floor fields.

Shower niches Accent walls Floor borders

Large Format Porcelain

Slabs 24×24 inches and larger โ€” a growing trend in modern interiors for minimal grout lines and a seamless appearance. Requires a perfectly flat substrate and a skilled installer to prevent lippage and cracking.

Tile Applications

Where NorTech Installs Tile in Your Home

Tile installation is location-specific โ€” what works in a bathroom floor has different requirements than a kitchen backsplash or an entryway. NorTech technicians are trained for every residential tile application.

Bathroom Floors

Wet area flooring requires slip-resistant tile, proper floor pitch toward the drain, and sealed grout joints. We handle layout planning so the pattern centers correctly in the room.

Shower Walls & Floors

The most technically demanding tile installation in a home. Requires waterproofing membrane, cement board substrate, sloped shower pan, and properly sealed transitions at corners and curbs.

Kitchen Floors

High-traffic, grease-prone environment. Porcelain is preferred for kitchen floors โ€” easy to clean, highly durable, and unaffected by the temperature swings near ovens and dishwashers.

Entryways & Mudrooms

First surface guests contact โ€” needs to handle dirt, moisture, and heavy foot traffic. Tile is the best long-term material for entry areas and outperforms hardwood and carpet in these conditions.

Laundry Rooms

Moisture from machines, potential spills, and heavy appliance loads make tile the only practical flooring choice in laundry rooms. We install with appropriate grout and sealing for the environment.

Fireplace Surrounds

Tile around fireplace surrounds and hearths requires heat-tolerant setting materials and careful layout planning around the firebox opening. We handle both the technical and aesthetic requirements.

Diagnose the Issue

Common Tile Problems That Need Professional Repair

Tile is one of the most durable surface materials in a home โ€” but only when installed correctly. These six problems are signs that something went wrong either during installation or with the substrate underneath.

Cracked Tile

Cracks almost always originate below the tile surface โ€” subfloor movement, missing expansion joints, or insufficient mortar coverage. Replacing only the cracked tile without fixing the cause results in the same crack returning.

Hollow or Loose Tile

Tap a tile โ€” a hollow sound means it has debonded from the substrate. Loose tiles crack under foot traffic and create moisture pathways in wet areas. Loose tiles should be re-set before water infiltration causes further damage.

Cracked or Crumbling Grout

Grout cracks are common in high-movement areas โ€” around tubs, at floor-to-wall transitions, and near doorways. Cracked grout in wet areas allows water behind the tile. Regrouting stops the moisture pathway before it becomes structural damage.

Lippage Between Tiles

Uneven tile edges โ€” where one tile sits higher than its neighbor โ€” are a tripping hazard and a sign of improper installation technique. Severe lippage requires tile removal and re-setting on a properly prepared substrate.

Efflorescence

White, chalky deposits on grout or tile surfaces are caused by water moving through the substrate and depositing minerals on the surface as it evaporates. It signals active moisture movement โ€” a sealing or waterproofing issue that needs to be addressed.

Grout Staining & Discoloration

Unsealed or worn grout absorbs stains permanently over time. In most cases, deep discoloration means the grout needs to be removed and replaced rather than cleaned. NorTech matches grout color to existing tile during regrouting.

Full bathroom floor and shower wall tile. The shower pan slope is perfect, grout lines are consistent, and they used waterproofing membrane behind the walls. No shortcuts that I could see.

Octavia M.

Large format porcelain in the kitchen and living area. They used leveling clips during install so there’s zero lippage anywhere in the floor. I wasn’t expecting that level of detail on the job.

Lionel D.

Had a cracked tile and failing grout in the master bath. They matched the grout color perfectly and the repaired section looks like it was never touched. Scheduling took a little longer than expected but the work was worth it.

Nadia R.

Entryway and laundry room tile in one visit. Both rooms look clean and professional. The grout is sealed and they cleaned up everything before leaving. Exactly what I needed done.

Garrett K.

Herringbone subway tile in the kitchen backsplash area. The layout is symmetrical and the cuts at the edges are clean. They took the time to plan it before starting rather than just diving in.

Wren P.

Natural stone in the primary bathroom. They sealed it before and after grouting which I specifically asked about โ€” most installers skip the pre-seal step. Good technician, knew the material well.

Common Questions

Tile Installation โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

Questions customers ask before booking tile installation or repair with NorTech.

Tile installation costs vary based on tile type, square footage, layout pattern, substrate condition, and whether existing tile needs to be removed. NorTech provides upfront estimates before any work begins. Request a free quote for a project-specific price.

A standard bathroom floor tile installation typically takes one day for setting and one additional day for grouting after the tile sets. Larger areas, complex patterns, or shower surrounds may take two to four days total. Your technician will provide a timeline based on the scope.

Yes. NorTech can remove existing tile as part of the project scope. Tile removal is labor-intensive and should be included in your quote. If you prefer to handle demo yourself, your technician will confirm what substrate prep is needed before new tile goes down.

NorTech installs ceramic tile, porcelain tile, natural stone including marble and travertine, mosaic tile, subway tile, and large format porcelain slabs. Each material has specific setting, grouting, and sealing requirements and our technicians are trained across all of them.

Grout lines should be sealed after installation in wet areas to prevent moisture infiltration and staining. Natural stone tile also requires sealing before and after grouting. NorTech technicians seal grout and stone as part of the installation process in applicable areas.

Yes. Shower tile installation is one of our most requested services. We use appropriate waterproofing membranes, cement board substrate, and moisture-rated setting materials for all wet area tile work to ensure long-term performance.

Tile cracks most commonly from subfloor movement, improper substrate preparation, insufficient mortar coverage, or missing expansion joints. Tile itself is rigid โ€” when the structure beneath it moves, the tile absorbs that stress and fails. Proper installation technique prevents this.

Yes. All NorTech tile installation labor is covered by a 1-year labor warranty. If any tile work we performed fails due to workmanship within one year of service, we return and correct it at no charge.
