Material Guide

Flooring Types NorTech Installs

Different rooms, different needs, different materials. NorTech installers are trained across every major flooring type used in residential construction. Here’s what we work with and what each material is best suited for.

Solid Hardwood

The most durable long-term option for dry living areas. Can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifespan. Requires acclimation and is not suitable for below-grade or moisture-prone spaces.

Living rooms Bedrooms Hallways

Engineered Hardwood

Real wood veneer over a plywood core โ€” more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood and suitable for basements and areas with moderate moisture. Easier to install and handles temperature swings better.

Basements Over concrete Open plans

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

100% waterproof, durable, and one of the most popular flooring materials for whole-home installs. Floats over existing subfloor in most cases, making it fast to install and easy to replace individual planks if damaged.

Whole home Bathrooms Kitchens

Laminate

A cost-effective hardwood alternative with a photographic wood layer over HDF core. Scratch-resistant and easy to maintain but not waterproof โ€” avoid in wet areas. Works well in high-traffic rooms where budget is a priority.

Living areas Bedrooms Offices

Ceramic & Porcelain Tile

The standard for wet areas. Porcelain is denser and more water-resistant than ceramic, making it the preferred choice for showers, bathroom floors, and entryways. Requires proper subfloor prep and grout sealing to perform long-term.

Bathrooms Kitchens Entryways

Carpet

Still the comfort choice for bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms. NorTech installs carpet with proper tack strip placement, padding selection, and power stretching to prevent buckling over time. Stairs and multi-room installs available.

Diagnose the Issue

Common Flooring Problems That Need Professional Attention

Some flooring issues can wait. These six cannot โ€” left unaddressed, they worsen and lead to full floor replacement or subfloor damage.

Squeaking & Creaking

Squeaks signal movement between the subfloor and joists or between flooring planks. The cause determines the fix โ€” surface screws, construction adhesive, or subfloor reinforcement depending on access.

Warping & Buckling

Floors that bow, cup, or separate at the seams are responding to moisture. The source needs to be identified and corrected before new flooring is installed, or the problem will repeat.

Gaps Between Planks

Gaps in hardwood or laminate are typically caused by humidity swings or improper installation. Small seasonal gaps are normal โ€” large or permanent gaps indicate a problem with installation or acclimation.

Cracked or Loose Tile

Cracked tile usually means movement in the subfloor beneath it. Replacing only the surface tile without addressing the substrate will result in repeated cracking. NorTech assesses both before repair.

Water Staining & Damage

Black staining on hardwood, soft spots in laminate, or spongy vinyl are signs of water infiltration. Damaged sections need to be removed and the moisture source corrected before reinstallation.

Worn & Faded Surface

Heavy-traffic areas show wear faster than the rest of a room. For hardwood, refinishing extends life significantly. For LVP and laminate, worn planks are replaced individually without removing the whole floor.

LVP throughout the entire first floor. They checked the subfloor before laying anything, found a soft spot near the kitchen, fixed it, and then installed. Everything is level and the transitions are clean.

Terrence B.

Had hardwood installed in the living room and dining area. Technician took time to plan the layout so the grain direction made sense across both rooms. Result looks exactly like I wanted.

Miriam C.

Carpet install on stairs and two bedrooms. Stretching was tight, seams are invisible, and the padding choice they recommended made a noticeable difference underfoot. Solid work overall.

Anita W.

Called about a squeaky floor in the hallway. They identified the issue was subfloor movement, not the hardwood itself, and fixed it from below without touching the finished surface. Problem solved completely.

Floyd N.

Porcelain tile in the bathroom and laundry room. Grout lines are even and sealed properly. They let the tile set before grouting rather than rushing it, which I appreciated. Good attention to process.

Sabrina O.

Three rooms of laminate replaced after water damage. They removed the old material, dried and prepped the subfloor, and installed the new laminate in two days. Clean work and no hidden charges.

Yes. NorTech technicians inspect the subfloor before installation and address soft spots, height transitions, squeaks, and moisture concerns. Installing over a compromised subfloor causes premature flooring failure, so we handle prep before material goes down.

A single room typically takes one day. Multi-room projects, large square footage, or installs requiring subfloor work may take two to three days. Your technician will give you a timeline once they assess the space and scope.

Yes. Solid hardwood typically requires 3 to 5 days of acclimation in the installation space before it can be installed. Engineered hardwood and LVP require less or no acclimation depending on the manufacturer. Your NorTech technician will confirm requirements based on your specific material.

Yes. NorTech installs tile, luxury vinyl plank, and other moisture-resistant flooring materials in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other wet areas. Solid hardwood and standard laminate are not recommended for wet areas and we will advise accordingly.
