General Questions
General Appliance Service FAQs
Common questions about how NorTech handles appliance appointments from start to finish.
How do I book an appliance service appointment?
Book online 24/7 at nortech.site using the Request a Quote form. During dispatch hours (MonโFri, 9 AMโ5 PM) you can also call or text our team directly. Most appointments are available within 24โ48 hours, with same-day service in many areas.
Your appointment is only confirmed after you approve the estimate and submit a payment authorization. No charge is captured until the work is complete and you accept the Completion Report.
Are your appliance technicians certified and background-checked?
Yes. Every NorTech appliance technician is factory-trained, certified, fully insured (liability + workers’ comp), and background-checked before they ever enter your home. We verify credentials continuously โ not just at hiring.
What warranties and guarantees come with appliance repairs?
All appliance labor is covered by NorTech’s 1-Year Labor Warranty โ if a workmanship defect appears within 12 months, we correct it at no additional labor cost. Parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty (typically 1โ5 years).
After every completed service, you have a 72-hour Satisfaction Review Window to inspect the work and submit any concerns before payment is finalized.
Good to Know
Warranty coverage requires that all follow-up work be performed by NorTech. Using a third-party technician voids the warranty.
How long do typical appliance repairs or installations take?
- Simple repairs (igniters, belts, filters): 30โ60 minutes
- Moderate repairs (pumps, valves, thermostats): 1โ2 hours
- Complex repairs (compressors, control boards): 2โ4 hours
- Standard installations: 1โ3 hours depending on appliance type
- Built-in or specialty installations: 3โ5 hours
We’ll give you a time estimate when scheduling and update you if anything changes on-site.
Is there a diagnostic fee?
Yes. A diagnostic fee covers the technician’s visit, full assessment, testing, and written estimate. If you approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is credited toward the total cost.
Can I get a quote before the technician comes out?
For common, straightforward issues we can provide a rough range over the phone. However, accurate quotes require an in-person diagnosis โ the same symptom (e.g., “won’t start”) can have multiple causes at very different price points. Our Virtual Service Assessment helps narrow this down before we arrive.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept all major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Buy Now Pay Later options through Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, and PayPal Pay Later. Payment is authorized at booking but only captured after you accept the Completion Report.
Technicians cannot accept payment directly โ all transactions go through NorTech to protect your warranty and guarantee eligibility.
What happens during an appliance service call?
- Technician arrives and introduces themselves
- Reviews the Work Order and confirms access
- Diagnoses the appliance (30โ60 min)
- Explains the issue in plain language
- Provides a written quote for your approval
- Completes the repair upon your approval
- Tests the appliance under normal operation
- Cleans the work area
- You review and accept the Completion Report
- Payment is captured โ 1-Year Warranty activates
Do I need to be home during the repair?
Yes. Someone 18 or older must be present to grant access, approve the diagnosis and quote, answer questions about the issue, and accept the Completion Report. Technicians cannot enter unattended homes.
What if you can’t fix my appliance the same day?
If parts need to be ordered, we identify the exact part, provide a written quote, order from a manufacturer or certified supplier, give you an ETA (2โ5 days for common parts, 3โ7 for specialty), and contact you when they arrive to schedule the return visit. You only pay once the repair is fully complete.
Do technicians carry common parts on their trucks?
Yes. Technicians stock high-turnover parts: thermostats, heating elements, igniters, door seals, water inlet valves, drain pumps, belts, switches, fuses, and more. This enables same-day completion for roughly 60โ70% of repairs.
Do you use OEM or aftermarket parts?
We prefer OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts for exact fit, quality, and manufacturer warranty coverage. We use quality aftermarket parts when OEM is discontinued, unavailable, or when a customer requests it for cost savings โ always disclosed upfront.
Is it safe to use a malfunctioning appliance while waiting for repair?
Stop using immediately if you notice: sparking, smoke, burning smells, gas smells, electrical shocks, or active water leaking from an electrical appliance.
Cautious use may be okay for minor performance issues (like slightly reduced heating), but schedule service soon and do not delay.
โ Safety First
When in doubt, shut the appliance off at the breaker and call us. A service delay is always better than a fire or flood.
What is the typical lifespan of household appliances?
- Garbage disposals: 10โ15 years
- Dishwashers: 9โ12 years
- Gas ranges: 15โ20 years
- Electric ranges: 13โ15 years
- Range hoods: 10โ15 years
- Refrigerators: 10โ18 years
- Washers: 10โ14 years
- Dryers: 10โ13 years
- Microwaves (OTR/built-in): 9โ12 years
Quality brands and regular maintenance can extend these by 3โ5 years.
Do you service luxury and high-end appliance brands?
Yes. NorTech technicians are certified on premium brands including Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Miele, Thermador, Bosch, KitchenAid, and others. Luxury appliances require specialized knowledge, OEM parts, and careful handling โ all of which our certified pros provide.
Can you remove and dispose of old appliances when installing new ones?
Yes. We charge a haul-away fee per unit to safely disconnect, remove, and properly recycle or dispose of your old appliance. Refrigerants from fridges and freezers are recovered in compliance with EPA regulations.
How do I know when to repair vs. replace an appliance?
A useful rule: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the appliance’s current replacement value and the unit is past its midpoint lifespan, replacement is usually the smarter investment. Our technicians will give you an honest assessment during diagnosis โ we never recommend repairs that don’t make financial sense for you.
Do you offer preventive maintenance plans for appliances?
Yes. Annual maintenance is available per appliance or at a discounted rate when bundled across multiple units. Regular maintenance extends appliance life 20โ30% and helps prevent 60% of common breakdowns before they become emergencies.
Garbage Disposals
Garbage Disposal FAQs
Repairs, installations, jams, leaks, and sizing โ everything about garbage disposals.
How do I know if my garbage disposal needs repair or replacement?
Repair if it’s under 8 years old, the motor still runs, and you’re dealing with jams, minor leaks, or noises.
Replace if it’s 10+ years old, the motor has burned out, there’s extensive corrosion, or the unit body is cracked.
What’s included in a new garbage disposal installation?
We remove your old disposal, install the new unit, connect all plumbing and electrical, test thoroughly, haul away the old disposal, and clean up. Typically takes 1โ2 hours. If you don’t currently have a disposal, we can add one โ this takes 2โ3 hours and may require a new electrical outlet under the sink.
What size / HP disposal does my household need?
- 1โ2 people, light use: 1/3โ1/2 HP
- 3โ5 people, regular use: 1/2 HP (most common)
- 5+ people or heavy cooking: 3/4 HP
- Large families or near-commercial volume: 1 HP
Our technician will recommend based on your household size, cooking habits, and sink setup.
What brands do you recommend and service?
We service all brands including InSinkErator, Waste King, Moen, KitchenAid, and GE. In our experience, InSinkErator leads in reliability (12โ15 year lifespan), followed by Waste King and Moen (10โ13 years). Avoid very cheap off-brand units โ they typically fail within 3โ5 years.
Can you fix a jammed disposal without replacing it?
Yes โ 85โ90% of jams are repairable. We cut power, manually rotate the grinding mechanism with an Allen wrench, safely remove the obstructing object, press reset, and test.
DIY First Step
Before calling, press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit and check the circuit breaker. If it hums but won’t spin, insert an Allen wrench into the center bottom port and manually rotate โ this frees most simple jams.
Why is my disposal leaking?
- Sink flange seal: deteriorated โ needs re-sealing (most common)
- Dishwasher hose connection: loose โ just needs tightening
- Drain pipe connection: worn gasket needs replacement
- Unit body crack: requires full replacement
Why does my disposal smell bad and how do I prevent it?
Odors come from food buildup and mold growth in the grinding chamber. Monthly maintenance: grind ice cubes with lemon or orange peels, then pour a baking soda and vinegar mix down the drain. Always run cold water for 30 seconds after each use. If odors persist, call us for a professional deep clean.
What foods should I avoid putting in the disposal?
Avoid: Cooking grease/oil, pasta and rice, fibrous vegetables (celery, artichokes, corn husks), large quantities of coffee grounds, potato peels in bulk, and large dense bones.
Fine to grind: Most food scraps, small soft bones, eggshells, citrus peels, and ice cubes.
Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaners with my disposal?
No. Chemical drain cleaners corrode internal components, damage seals and gaskets, can splash back hazardously, and usually don’t fully clear the clog. Use baking soda and vinegar for maintenance, or call us to properly clear stubborn clogs.
Can I still use my sink if the disposal is broken?
Yes, carefully. Use a drain strainer to catch food particles, scrape plates thoroughly before rinsing, and avoid putting anything down the drain that would normally go in the disposal. Schedule repair within 1โ2 weeks to restore full function.
Dishwashers
Dishwasher FAQs
Repairs, installations, cleaning issues, leaks, and efficiency questions.
Repair or replace โ how do I decide?
Repair if it’s under 7 years old with a single issue. Replace if it’s 10+ years old with multiple failures, or if you want the 40โ50% water and energy savings of a current Energy Star model.
My dishwasher won’t start โ what should I check first?
Check these before calling: door fully latched, circuit breaker not tripped, water supply valve fully open, and delay-start not accidentally activated. If none of those are the issue, the door latch assembly, control board, or touchpad may have failed โ we can diagnose and repair all of these.
My dishwasher won’t drain โ can you fix it?
Yes. Common causes: clogged filter (clean it yourself monthly โ just rinse under hot water), clogged drain hose, failed drain pump, or a blocked garbage disposal connection. If your disposal was recently installed and the knockout plug wasn’t removed, that’s often the culprit.
Why are my dishes coming out dirty, cloudy, or spotted?
Start with these: add rinse aid, run an empty hot vinegar cycle, clean the spray arm holes with a toothpick, switch to quality detergent pods, and verify your water heater is set to 120ยฐF. Hard water is a major culprit โ consider a water softener for long-term improvement. If results don’t improve, the heating element, spray arm, or water inlet valve may need replacement.
Should I rinse dishes before loading?
No โ just scrape off large chunks of food. Pre-rinsing wastes water and actually confuses soil sensors, causing the dishwasher to run a lighter cycle. Exception: if you’re not running the machine immediately, a quick rinse prevents odors from dried food.
My dishwasher is leaking โ what do I do?
Stop using it immediately. Even minor leaks cause significant water damage over time. Likely causes include a worn door gasket, failed pump seal, cracked spray arm, loose drain hose, or faulty water inlet valve. Call us right away for diagnosis.
Why is my dishwasher cycle taking so long?
Modern dishwashers normally run 1.5โ3 hours โ they use less water and compensate with longer spray cycles. If your machine has suddenly become slower than usual, a failing heating element, dirty sensors, or a glitching control board may be the cause. Cycles consistently exceeding 4 hours warrant a diagnostic call.
Can you install a dishwasher where there wasn’t one before?
Yes. You’ll need a 24โณ cabinet opening, hot water line access, a drain connection, and an electrical outlet or hardwire circuit. We can handle or coordinate all of this. New installation takes 3โ5 hours; like-for-like replacement typically takes 2โ3 hours.
Is a dishwasher actually more water-efficient than hand-washing?
Significantly. Modern dishwashers use 3โ5 gallons per full load versus 10โ27 gallons for hand-washing the same load. They also sanitize more effectively at 140โ160ยฐF. You’ll save 3,000โ5,000 gallons per year.
How often should I clean the filter?
Monthly. Remove the filter from the bottom of the tub, rinse under hot water, scrub lightly if needed, wipe the housing, and reinstall. Takes 5 minutes and prevents 80% of drain issues. Many people don’t even know their dishwasher has a filter โ check your manual for location.
Oven & Stove
Oven & Stove FAQs
Gas, electric, induction โ repairs, installations, safety, and performance questions.
Do you work on both gas and electric ovens and stoves?
Yes. We service natural gas, propane, electric coil, smooth-top ceramic, induction, and dual-fuel units. Our technicians are certified for both gas and electrical work โ no need to find separate specialists.
What should I do if I smell gas near my stove?
โ Gas Emergency โ Act Immediately
Do not light anything. Do not flip light switches. Turn off the gas supply valve if safe. Open windows. Evacuate everyone (including pets). Call the gas company’s emergency line from outside. Call NorTech only after the gas company has cleared the area.
My oven isn’t heating at all โ what’s the cause?
Electric ovens: burned-out heating element (most common), failed thermostat, blown thermal fuse, or bad control board.
Gas ovens: weak or failed igniter accounts for ~70% of cases, failed gas valve, or faulty thermostat.
My oven heats unevenly โ can you fix it?
Yes. Test with an oven thermometer first โ if it’s off by more than 25ยฐF, there’s likely a failed thermostat, burned-out heating element, worn door seal, or failed convection fan. Calibration and repair are both straightforward fixes.
My burner won’t ignite or stay lit โ what’s wrong?
Gas burner: Try cleaning around the igniter with a dry toothbrush first โ food debris is the most common cause. If cleaning doesn’t help, the igniter or thermocouple may need replacement.
Electric burner: The coil or radiant element may be burned out, or the control switch failed.
My oven is smoking or sparking โ what do I do?
Stop using it and cut power or gas. Smoke from food spills on the oven floor is normal, but electrical smoke, chemical smells, or any sparking indicate a serious electrical short. Call us for same-day emergency service โ don’t run the oven again until inspected.
Can I switch from gas to electric (or vice versa)?
It’s possible but involves significant additional work. Gas to electric requires a 240V outlet plus capping the gas line. Electric to gas requires running a gas line (which may need permits). Unless you’re doing a broader kitchen remodel, it’s usually more cost-effective to stay with what you have.
Do you install wall ovens, ranges, and cooktops?
Yes โ freestanding ranges, slide-in ranges, drop-in ranges, single and double wall ovens, and all cooktop types (gas, electric, induction). Range replacement typically takes 1.5โ2.5 hours; wall oven installation takes 2โ4 hours.
Range Hoods
Range Hood FAQs
Ducted vs. ductless, noise issues, filter maintenance, and performance questions.
What’s the difference between ducted and ductless range hoods?
Ducted: Vents air outside โ far more effective at removing smoke, grease, and odors. Requires ductwork. Better for heavy cooking.
Ductless: Recirculates air through charcoal filters โ no ductwork needed, easier to install. Good for light cooking or where ducting isn’t feasible.
We install both. Replacement of an existing hood: 2โ3 hours. New installation with ductwork: 4โ6 hours.
My range hood is making a loud noise โ can you fix it?
Usually yes. Common causes: fan blade obstruction, worn motor bearings, loose mounting hardware, or duct vibration. Most noise issues are resolved in a single service call without needing replacement.
Why isn’t my range hood effectively removing smoke or odors?
Start by cleaning or replacing filters. If that doesn’t solve it: grease-blocked ductwork, a weakening fan motor, an undersized hood for your cooktop, or ductwork that’s too long or has too many bends. We can assess and correct all of these.
How often should I clean or replace filters?
- Metal mesh/baffle filters (ducted): Clean monthly in the dishwasher. Only replace if damaged โ they last 5โ10 years.
- Charcoal filters (ductless): Replace every 3โ6 months. They cannot be washed.
Regular filter maintenance prevents 70% of performance and noise issues.
What should I do if I smell burning or see sparks in my range hood?
โ Stop Use Immediately
Turn off the hood at the breaker and call us for same-day service. Sparks or burning smells indicate an electrical short, motor overheating, or a grease fire risk โ do not run the hood again until inspected.
Can I switch from ductless to ducted ventilation?
Yes. Converting ductless to ducted requires running new ductwork to the outside โ we handle this. The reverse (ducted to ductless) is simpler and just requires installing charcoal filters and capping the duct.
Refrigerators
Refrigerator FAQs
Cooling issues, noise, ice makers, water dispensers, energy efficiency, and more.
Repair or replace โ how do I decide?
Repair if under 8 years old with a single issue. Replace if 12+ years old with compressor failure, multiple issues, or if you want the energy savings โ modern Energy Star fridges use 40โ75% less electricity than older models.
My refrigerator isn’t cooling properly โ what do I do?
Check these first: temperature dial set to 37โ40ยฐF (fridge) and 0ยฐF (freezer), door seals fully closing, unit not overfilled blocking airflow, and condenser coils not coated in dust. If cooling is still poor, the thermostat, compressor, refrigerant charge, or fan motor may need attention. Call for same-day service โ food safety is at stake.
Why is my refrigerator running constantly?
Most common cause: dirty condenser coils. Vacuum the dust off coils (usually on the back or bottom of the unit) โ this alone prevents 40% of cooling failures and reduces energy bills by 5โ10%. Other causes include a leaking door seal, temperature set too low, or a frosted-over freezer needing a manual defrost.
Why is my fridge making strange noises?
Normal: Humming, gentle clicking when cycling, gurgling (refrigerant moving).
Call us: Loud buzzing (fan obstruction or motor issue), knocking (compressor may be failing), squealing (fan motor bearings worn).
Why is there frost buildup in my freezer?
Likely causes: damaged door seal letting in humid air, door left open frequently, failed defrost system (heater, thermostat, or timer), or temperature set too cold (should be 0ยฐF). If doing a manual defrost doesn’t solve it, the defrost system components need replacement.
My ice maker stopped working โ can you fix it?
Yes. Common causes: frozen water line, clogged water filter (replace every 6 months), failed water inlet valve, or a failed ice maker module. Most ice maker issues are resolved in a single visit.
My water dispenser is leaking or not working โ what’s wrong?
Possible causes: frozen water line, clogged filter due for replacement, failed dispenser valve, or a cracked water line. Replace the filter first (every 6 months) โ a clogged filter is the most common culprit for slow or no water flow.
How often should I clean the coils and replace the water filter?
- Condenser coils: Every 6 months. Vacuum dust off. Prevents 40% of cooling failures.
- Water filter: Every 6 months. Keeps ice and water tasting fresh.
- Door gaskets: Wipe monthly with warm water. Inspect annually for tears or gaps.
Can extreme temperatures affect my refrigerator’s performance?
Yes. Most refrigerators are rated for 55โ110ยฐF ambient temperature. Below 55ยฐF, the compressor may not run enough to cool the freezer properly. Above 110ยฐF, it overworks and can fail prematurely. A hot kitchen above 85ยฐF increases energy consumption significantly.
Washer & Dryer
Washer & Dryer FAQs
Leaks, vibration, heating problems, fire safety, smart features, and installation questions.
Repair or replace โ how do I decide?
Repair if under 8 years old with a single issue. Replace if 10+ years old with transmission or bearing failure, or if you want the energy and water savings โ HE washers use 50% less water and 25% less energy than older models.
My washer won’t start, fill, or drain โ where do I begin?
Won’t start: Check power and breaker, confirm door is fully closed, check if child lock is active.
Won’t fill: Confirm water valves are fully open, clean inlet screens, check for kinked hoses.
Won’t drain: Check for kinked drain hose, clean the pump filter, look for debris stuck in the pump.
If none of these solve it, the control board, inlet valve, or drain pump likely needs replacement.
Why is my washer shaking or vibrating violently?
Most common cause: unbalanced load. Redistribute items and run again. If vibration persists, the machine may be unlevel (adjust the feet with a wrench), or the shock absorbers or drum bearings are worn. Violent vibration can damage your floors and the machine โ address it promptly.
My washer has a moldy smell โ how do I fix it?
Run a hot “Clean Washer” cycle monthly. Leave the door open between loads to air out. Wipe the door seal (gasket) dry after every use. Use HE detergent in proper amounts โ too much creates residue that feeds mold. Clean the detergent dispenser drawer regularly. If odor persists, the door seal may need replacement.
My dryer isn’t heating โ what’s the cause?
Electric dryers: burned-out heating element (most common), blown thermal fuse, or failed thermostat.
Gas dryers: failed igniter, bad gas valve coil, or blown thermal fuse.
We carry all common dryer heating components on the truck โ most “no heat” repairs are completed same day.
Why is my dryer taking multiple cycles to dry clothes?
The most common โ and most dangerous โ cause is lint buildup. Clean the lint trap after every single load. Clean the entire vent hose and exterior vent flap annually. Other causes: weak heating element, failing thermostat, or a dirty moisture sensor (wipe with rubbing alcohol).
โ Fire Hazard
Long dry times equal lint buildup, which causes roughly 2,900 house fires per year in the U.S. Never leave the dryer running unattended with a restricted vent. Annual vent cleaning reduces fire risk by 90%.
Is my dryer a fire hazard?
Warning signs: clothes taking very long to dry, clothes extremely hot at cycle end, burning smells, excessive lint accumulating around the dryer exterior, or the vent flap not opening fully when running. Prevention: clean the lint trap after every load, have the vent professionally cleaned annually, don’t over-stuff loads, and never leave the dryer running when you leave home.
Do you install stackable, compact, and combo washer/dryer units?
Yes. We install top-load and front-load washers, gas and electric dryers, stackable sets, compact 24โณ units, pedestal mounting, and all-in-one combo washer/dryer units. All brands including LG, Samsung, GE, Whirlpool, Maytag, Speed Queen, Miele, and Bosch. Stackable installation takes 2โ3 hours.
Can you diagnose error codes on smart washers and dryers?
Yes. We have diagnostic tools for all major brands and can read and interpret error codes for all smart, WiFi-connected, and app-enabled models. Common codes include UE/LE (unbalanced load), OE (drain failure), DE (door error), and FE (overfill). We’ll clear the code and fix the underlying cause.
How often should I maintain hoses, lint traps, and filters?
- Dryer lint trap: After every single load. Deep clean monthly.
- Dryer vent hose: Annually โ reduces fire risk by 90%.
- Washer pump filter: Monthly for front-loaders โ prevents drain issues.
- Washer inlet hoses: Inspect annually; replace every 5 years.
Microwaves
Microwave FAQs
Over-the-range, built-in, and countertop microwave repairs and installations.
What types of microwaves do you service and install?
We service and install over-the-range (OTR) microwaves and built-in microwaves. Countertop microwaves are generally not worth repairing given the low replacement cost โ we’ll let you know honestly during assessment. OTR installation takes 1.5โ2.5 hours; built-in drawer microwaves take 2โ4 hours.
My microwave isn’t heating โ is it worth repairing?
For OTR or built-in models, yes โ a failed magnetron, diode, or capacitor is repairable and often costs significantly less than a replacement unit. For countertop microwaves, repair usually isn’t economical.
โ High-Voltage Warning
Never attempt DIY microwave repair. Capacitors inside hold a lethal charge even when the unit is unplugged. Always use a certified technician.
My microwave is sparking inside โ what should I do?
Stop using it immediately and unplug it. Sparking is most commonly caused by metal accidentally left inside, a damaged waveguide cover (the cardboard-like panel inside the cavity), or a failing magnetron. The waveguide cover is an inexpensive part โ we can replace it in a single visit. Don’t run the microwave again until inspected.
My OTR microwave’s exhaust fan or light stopped working โ can you fix it?
Yes. Exhaust fan issues (motor, fan blade, or control switch) and lighting (bulb socket, LED board, or control board) are all serviceable. These repairs are straightforward and typically done in 45โ90 minutes.
My microwave display or touchpad isn’t responding โ what’s wrong?
Try a hard reset first: unplug for 60 seconds, plug back in. If the issue persists, the touchpad membrane, control board, or door switch may have failed. Control board replacements are cost-effective on OTR and built-in models.
Can you install an OTR microwave to replace my range hood?
Yes. OTR microwaves combine a ventilation fan with a microwave oven. We handle the full installation including wall mounting, electrical connection, and ductwork (ducted) or filter setup (ductless). You’ll need a dedicated 120V circuit โ we’ll verify this during assessment.
How long should an OTR or built-in microwave last?
OTR and built-in microwaves last 9โ12 years with normal use. Countertop models average 7โ10 years. Regular cleaning (especially the interior and waveguide cover) and not running empty significantly extend lifespan.
