Before You Call
Four Things to Check First
Many washer and dryer calls come down to one of these simple checks. Work through this list before requesting service โ if none of them fix it, NorTech will.
Diagnostic Checklist โ check each step before calling for service
Step 1
Check the Lid or Door Is Fully Closed
Washers will not start or spin if the lid or door isn’t fully latched. Front-loaders have a door latch sensor โ if it doesn’t register as closed, the machine locks out entirely. Make sure nothing is caught in the door gasket preventing a full seal.
Step 2
Check the Drain Hose Isn’t Kinked
A kinked or pinched drain hose behind the machine is the most overlooked cause of a washer that fills but won’t drain. Pull the machine out slightly and confirm the hose has a smooth curve with no sharp bends or compression against the wall.
Step 3
Check the Dryer Vent Isn’t Blocked
A clogged dryer vent is the most common cause of a dryer that runs but doesn’t heat or takes multiple cycles to dry clothes. Check the exterior vent cap โ it should open freely when the dryer runs. A blocked vent also trips the thermal fuse, which prevents heating entirely.
Step 4
Check the Circuit Breaker
Washers and dryers are on dedicated circuits. A tripped breaker leaves the unit completely unresponsive. Electric dryers use a double-pole breaker โ if only one leg trips, the drum may turn but the heating element won’t work, making it look like a heating fault when it’s actually a breaker issue.

What Affects the Cost of Washer & Dryer Repair?
Washer and dryer repair and installation costs depend on several factors. Click any factor to learn more.
Top-load and front-load washers have different internal components and labor requirements. Gas dryers require additional leak testing steps that add time.
A lid switch or drain pump filter is a quick fix. A motor, control board, or drum bearing replacement requires more parts and labor time.
Parts cost varies significantly by manufacturer. Premium or commercial-grade brands like Speed Queen or Miele carry higher parts costs than standard consumer models.
Stackable units require the stack to be separated to access components, which adds labor time to any repair or installation job.
Standard water line and drain hookup is straightforward. Gas dryer connections, new venting, or electrical work adds scope and cost to the installation.
Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins โ no surprises.
Diagnose the Problem
Common Washer & Dryer Problems and What Causes Them
Most washer and dryer failures have a predictable root cause. Here’s what the symptom usually points to.
Washer Won’t Drain
A clogged drain pump filter is the most common cause โ often from coins, debris, or small garments getting past the drum. A kinked or blocked drain hose and a failed pump motor are the other frequent causes. Easily fixed on the first visit in most cases.
Washer Won’t Spin
On top-loaders, a failed lid switch is the most likely cause โ the machine won’t enter the spin cycle if it thinks the lid is open. On front-loaders, a faulty door latch sensor or worn motor brushes are common. An unbalanced load can also prevent spinning.
Washer Leaking Water
Leaks from the front typically indicate a worn door boot seal on front-loaders. Leaks from underneath usually point to a failed pump or a loose drain hose connection. Overfilling due to a bad water inlet valve can also cause pooling around the machine.
Dryer Not Heating
On electric dryers, a blown thermal fuse is the single most common cause โ often triggered by a blocked vent duct. The heating element itself can also fail. On gas dryers, a weak igniter or failed gas valve solenoid prevents the burner from lighting. We test and clear the vent on every dryer call.
Dryer Taking Too Long
A partially blocked vent duct is the cause most people overlook โ restricted airflow forces the dryer to run multiple cycles to dry a single load. A worn drum seal letting cold air in is the other common culprit. Both are quick fixes that also prevent fire hazards.
Loud Noise During Operation
A thumping or banging noise from a washer usually indicates worn drum bearings or shock absorbers. In dryers, a squealing or grinding sound typically means a worn drum support roller, idler pulley, or drive belt. Left unaddressed, these cause more expensive damage over time.
Repair or Replace?
When to Repair Your Washer or Dryer vs. Buy New
The 50% rule applies: if the repair is under half the cost of a replacement and the unit is under 10 years old, repair is almost always worth it. NorTech handles both โ we’ll tell you honestly which direction makes more sense.
Repair Makes Sense Whenโฆ
- The unit is under 8โ10 years old
- Repair cost is less than 50% of replacement value
- The fault is a single diagnosable component
- It’s a premium brand like Speed Queen or Miele
- Replacement would require laundry room modifications
- The unit is still under manufacturer warranty
New Installation Makes Sense Whenโฆ
- The unit is 12+ years old
- This is the second or third major repair
- The motor or transmission has failed completely
- Parts are discontinued or unavailable
- Drum or tub has structural damage
- You’re upgrading to a stackable or combo unit

Common Questions
Washer & Dryer Repair and Installation โ FAQ
Repair costs vary depending on the appliance type and the specific part that failed. NorTech provides a full diagnostic estimate on-site before any work begins โ you approve the price before we touch anything.
Installation cost depends on the configuration, connection type (gas or electric), and whether haul-away of the old unit is included. NorTech provides a complete upfront quote before installation begins โ no surprises.
The most common causes are a clogged drain pump filter, a failed lid switch or door latch preventing the spin cycle from engaging, a worn drive belt, or a blocked drain hose. In top-load washers, a broken clutch is also a frequent culprit. Most of these are same-visit repairs.
On electric dryers, a blown thermal fuse or failed heating element is the most common cause โ often triggered by a blocked vent duct. On gas dryers, a faulty igniter or gas valve solenoid is typically responsible. NorTech checks and clears the dryer vent as part of every dryer diagnostic call.
If the repair is under 50% of the replacement cost and the unit is under 10 years old, repair is almost always the better financial call. Our technicians give you an honest assessment โ if replacement makes more sense, we’ll say so and can handle the new unit installation on the same or next visit.
We service all major brands including Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Maytag, GE, Frigidaire, Bosch, Speed Queen, Electrolux, Kenmore, Amana, Miele, Fisher & Paykel, Blomberg, and more. If it’s a residential washer or dryer sold in the US, we can work on it.
