Before You Call
Three Things to Check First
Some oven and stove issues have simple causes. Work through this checklist before requesting service โ if none of these fix it, NorTech will.
Diagnostic Checklist โ check each step before calling for service
Step 1
Check the Gas Burner Cap Is Seated Correctly
Gas burners that click but won’t light are often caused by a burner cap that was knocked out of alignment during cleaning. The cap must sit flat and centered over the burner base. Even a small offset prevents gas from reaching the igniter port properly. Remove, realign, and press firmly back into place.
Step 2
Check the Self-Clean Lock Is Not Engaged
An oven that won’t open or won’t heat after a self-clean cycle has a door latch that is still engaged. This happens when the oven hasn’t fully cooled after the cycle โ the latch releases automatically once the internal temperature drops below a threshold. Wait 30โ60 minutes after the cycle before assuming the latch has failed.
Step 3
Check the Circuit Breaker (Electric Ovens)
Electric ovens and ranges run on a 240V double-pole breaker. If one leg of the breaker trips, the oven may partially power on โ the clock and lights work but the elements don’t heat. This looks like a heating fault but is actually a breaker issue. Check your electrical panel before calling for service.
What We Do
Oven & Stove Repair and Installation
NorTech handles both sides of the job โ repairing your existing oven or stove, or professionally installing a new unit with all gas, electrical, and safety connections done correctly.
Oven & Stove Repair
Gas and electric ovens and stoves fail in predictable ways โ and most faults are repairable on the first visit. NorTech technicians carry bake elements, igniters, temperature sensors, control boards, and gas valve components on every truck. We diagnose the root cause before quoting, so there are no surprises.
- Oven not heating or not reaching set temperature
- Gas burners not igniting or clicking constantly
- Electric burners not heating or glowing red
- Oven heating unevenly or burning on one side
- Self-clean cycle not working or door locked after cycle
- Oven door not closing or seal worn out
- Control panel, display, or touchpad not responding
- Broiler not working on gas or electric models
- Temperature sensor and thermostat faults
- Gas igniter or valve replacement
Oven & Stove Installation
Installing a new gas range or wall oven isn’t just a matter of sliding it into place. Gas line connections must be leak-tested, electrical connections require the correct wiring, anti-tip brackets are a code requirement for freestanding ranges, and wall oven cutouts must be measured precisely. NorTech handles every step and tests the unit before we leave.
- Gas line connection and leak test
- Electric range 240V connection
- Anti-tip bracket installation (freestanding ranges)
- Wall oven cutout fitting and mounting
- Cooktop cutout fitting and sealing
- Slide-in range fit and trim installation
- Burner and oven function test before completion
- Old unit disconnect and haul-away

Transparent Pricing
What Affects the Cost of Oven & Stove Repair?
Oven and stove repair and installation pricing depends on the appliance configuration, fuel type, and the component involved. Click any factor to learn more.
Gas appliance work requires igniter and valve diagnostics plus a mandatory leak test after every repair or installation. This adds time to the job versus electric models.
A freestanding range is easier to access than a built-in wall oven. Slide-in ranges and dual-fuel models have more complex installation requirements.
A bake element or igniter is a straightforward replacement. A control board, gas valve assembly, or self-clean latch mechanism involves more labor and higher parts cost.
Professional brands like Wolf, Viking, and Thermador carry substantially higher parts costs than standard consumer ranges. Parts must sometimes be ordered and scheduled.
New gas line connections, 240V electrical work, anti-tip bracket installation, and cutout modifications for wall ovens each add scope to the installation.
Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins โ no surprises.
Diagnose the Problem
Common Oven & Stove Problems and What Causes Them
Most oven and stove failures point to a small number of components. Here’s what each symptom usually means.
Oven Not Heating
On electric ovens, a failed bake element is the most common cause โ it’s visible as a break or burn mark on the element itself. On gas ovens, a weak igniter that can’t hold the gas valve open long enough to ignite is the typical fault. A faulty temperature sensor can also prevent the oven from reaching temperature on both types.
Gas Burners Won’t Ignite
Burners that click repeatedly but won’t light usually have a clogged igniter port or burner cap blocked by food debris โ often cleaned on the spot. If the igniter sparks but gas doesn’t flow, the spark module or gas valve is at fault. No clicking at all typically means a failed igniter switch or wiring issue.
Oven Heating Unevenly
Uneven baking is almost always caused by a partially failed bake element that still heats but not uniformly, a faulty convection fan not circulating heat properly, or a temperature sensor giving inaccurate readings. Oven calibration issues after a control board replacement can also cause this.
Self-Clean Door Locked
An oven door that locks and won’t release after a self-clean cycle has a failed door latch motor or a thermal switch that hasn’t reset due to residual heat. Never force the door open โ this bends the latch mechanism and creates a more expensive repair. NorTech resets or replaces the latch assembly.
Control Panel Not Responding
An unresponsive touchpad or display is typically caused by a failed control board, a faulty touchpad membrane, or a loose ribbon cable connection. On newer smart ranges, software errors that require a board reset or replacement are increasingly common.
Broiler Not Working
On electric ovens, a failed broil element is the direct cause. On gas ovens, the broiler igniter and gas valve are separate from the bake burner โ either can fail independently. A working bake function with a dead broiler is a common pattern and almost always a single-component repair.
Repair or Replace?
When to Repair Your Oven or Stove vs. Install New
Ranges and ovens typically last 15โ20 years. Most component failures before the 12-year mark are worth repairing โ parts are widely available and labor is straightforward on most models.
Repair Makes Sense Whenโฆ
- The unit is under 12 years old
- Repair cost is under 50% of replacement value
- The fault is a single component โ element, igniter, sensor
- It’s a high-end pro range (Wolf, Viking, Thermador)
- Replacement requires countertop or cabinet modifications
- Only one burner or the broiler has failed, not the full unit
New Installation Makes Sense Whenโฆ
- The unit is 15+ years old
- Multiple components have failed or are failing
- The control board has failed on an older basic model
- Parts are discontinued or unavailable
- You’re switching from electric to gas or vice versa
- You’re remodeling and upgrading to a built-in configuration

Common Questions
Oven & Stove Repair and Installation โ FAQ
Repair costs vary depending on the appliance type and the component that failed. NorTech provides a full diagnostic estimate on-site before any work begins โ you approve the price before we start.
Installation cost depends on the appliance type, whether a gas or electrical connection is required, and whether haul-away of the old unit is included. Gas range installations include a leak test. NorTech provides upfront pricing before installation begins.
On electric ovens, a failed bake element or broil element is the most common cause. On gas ovens, a weak igniter that cannot hold the gas valve open long enough to light is the typical culprit. A faulty temperature sensor or control board can also cause temperature inaccuracies on both types.
Gas burners that click but won’t light usually have a clogged burner cap or igniter port blocked by food debris โ often cleanable on the spot. If the igniter sparks but gas doesn’t flow, a faulty spark module or gas valve is the cause. Burners with no clicking at all typically have a failed igniter switch.
A single failed burner is generally safe to work around while scheduling a repair. However, if you smell gas near any burner or from the oven at any time, turn off the appliance, ventilate the area, and do not use it until a technician has inspected it.
