Most garbage disposal calls turn out to be one of three simple issues. Work through this checklist before requesting service — if none of them fix it, NorTech will.

Step 1
Press the Reset Button
There is a small red or black reset button on the bottom of the disposal unit. If the motor overheated or tripped, this button pops out. Press it firmly until you feel it click, then try the disposal again. This resolves a significant number of “dead disposal” calls.
Step 2
Check the Circuit Breaker
Garbage disposals are on a dedicated circuit in most homes. If the breaker tripped — especially after a jam — the disposal will have no power at all regardless of the reset button. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker before calling for service.
Step 3
Use the Hex Wrench Port
Most disposals have a hex wrench port on the bottom center of the unit. Insert a 1/4-inch hex key and work it back and forth to manually free a jammed grinding plate. This can clear a jam without any disassembly. InSinkErator units typically include this wrench.

Most disposal failures come down to a small number of causes. Here’s what each symptom points to.
Disposal Humming But Not Spinning
The motor is receiving power but the grinding plate is jammed by a hard object — a bone fragment, fruit pit, small utensil, or bottle cap that got into the chamber. The motor hums because it’s trying to turn but can’t. Do not run it repeatedly when jammed — this burns out the motor. The jam needs to be cleared manually.
Disposal Completely Dead
No sound at all means no power is reaching the unit. Work through three checks in order: the reset button on the bottom of the unit, the circuit breaker in your electrical panel, and the wall switch. If all three check out and the unit still doesn’t respond, the motor or wiring has failed and needs professional diagnosis.
Disposal Leaking from Top
Leaks from the top of the unit where it meets the sink drain opening are caused by a failed sink flange seal or loose mounting bolts — the putty or gasket that creates the watertight seal between the flange and the sink has deteriorated. This is a straightforward repair that does not require unit replacement.
Disposal Leaking from Bottom
Leaks from the bottom of the unit indicate a failed internal seal — the seal between the motor section and the grinding chamber has worn out and allows water to pass through. On older units this typically means replacement is more cost-effective than repair, since the internal seal requires nearly full disassembly to replace.
Grinding Noise or Rattling
A grinding, rattling, or metallic noise during operation almost always means a foreign object is in the grinding chamber — a small piece of broken glass, a bottle cap, or a small bone fragment. The chamber needs to be cleared before running the unit again. Running it with a hard object in the chamber damages the grinding components.
Reset Button Keeps Tripping
A reset button that trips repeatedly after being reset indicates the motor is overheating consistently. This is caused by a partial jam the motor is fighting against, a worn motor that draws too much current, or an undersized unit being overworked. Repeated tripping accelerates motor wear significantly.
