Three Things to Check First

Most garbage disposal calls turn out to be one of three simple issues. Work through this checklist before requesting service โ€” if none of them fix it, NorTech will.

Diagnostic Checklist โ€” check each step before calling for service

Step 1
Press the Reset Button

There is a small red or black reset button on the bottom of the disposal unit. If the motor overheated or tripped, this button pops out. Press it firmly until you feel it click, then try the disposal again. This resolves a significant number of “dead disposal” calls.

Step 2
Check the Circuit Breaker

Garbage disposals are on a dedicated circuit in most homes. If the breaker tripped โ€” especially after a jam โ€” the disposal will have no power at all regardless of the reset button. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker before calling for service.

Step 3
Use the Hex Wrench Port

Most disposals have a hex wrench port on the bottom center of the unit. Insert a 1/4-inch hex key and work it back and forth to manually free a jammed grinding plate. This can clear a jam without any disassembly. InSinkErator units typically include this wrench.

Garbage Disposal Repair and Installation

If the three checks above didn’t fix it, NorTech will. We handle all garbage disposal repairs and full new unit installations with upfront pricing and a 1-year labor warranty on every job.

Garbage Disposal Repair

Garbage disposal failures are almost always caused by one of a small number of faults โ€” and most are fixable on the spot. NorTech technicians carry common replacement parts for all major brands on every truck. We diagnose the fault, quote the repair, and fix it โ€” usually in under an hour from arrival.

  • Disposal jammed โ€” grinding plate won’t turn
  • Humming but not spinning
  • Completely dead โ€” no sound, no response
  • Leaking from top, side, or bottom of unit
  • Grinding or rattling noise during operation
  • Disposal runs but doesn’t grind effectively
  • Wall switch not working
  • Reset button tripping repeatedly

Garbage Disposal Installation

Installing a garbage disposal correctly means a leak-free connection at the sink flange, a properly routed drain line, secure mounting that doesn’t transmit vibration to the cabinet, and correct switch wiring. NorTech handles the complete installation and runs the unit through a full test cycle before the job is considered finished.

  • Sink flange mounting and sealing
  • Mounting assembly installation and securing
  • Drain line connection and routing
  • Dishwasher drain knockout (if applicable)
  • Electrical hardwire or cord-and-plug setup
  • Wall switch installation or connection
  • Full leak test at all connection points
  • Old unit removal and haul-away

What Affects the Cost of Garbage Disposal Repair & Installation?

Garbage disposal repair and installation is one of the most straightforward appliance services. Click any factor to learn more.

Clearing a jam or pressing a reset button costs far less than replacing a motor or switch. Most jam and drain issues are resolved quickly on the first visit.

Top flange and side connection leaks are straightforward gasket or seal repairs. A bottom leak typically means the unit needs replacement, which changes the scope entirely.

Larger, higher-horsepower disposals cost more to purchase. Installation labor is similar across sizes, but the unit cost itself varies significantly by model.

If the wall switch or wiring needs replacement as part of the job, this adds a small amount of additional labor time.

Removing and disposing of the old disposal unit is included on request. Quoted upfront as part of the installation estimate.

Every job starts with a full on-site diagnostic. You receive a complete written estimate before any work begins โ€” no surprises.

Common Garbage Disposal Problems and What Causes Them

Most disposal failures come down to a small number of causes. Here’s what each symptom points to.

Disposal Humming But Not Spinning

The motor is receiving power but the grinding plate is jammed by a hard object โ€” a bone fragment, fruit pit, small utensil, or bottle cap that got into the chamber. The motor hums because it’s trying to turn but can’t. Do not run it repeatedly when jammed โ€” this burns out the motor. The jam needs to be cleared manually.

Disposal Completely Dead

No sound at all means no power is reaching the unit. Work through three checks in order: the reset button on the bottom of the unit, the circuit breaker in your electrical panel, and the wall switch. If all three check out and the unit still doesn’t respond, the motor or wiring has failed and needs professional diagnosis.

Disposal Leaking from Top

Leaks from the top of the unit where it meets the sink drain opening are caused by a failed sink flange seal or loose mounting bolts โ€” the putty or gasket that creates the watertight seal between the flange and the sink has deteriorated. This is a straightforward repair that does not require unit replacement.

Disposal Leaking from Bottom

Leaks from the bottom of the unit indicate a failed internal seal โ€” the seal between the motor section and the grinding chamber has worn out and allows water to pass through. On older units this typically means replacement is more cost-effective than repair, since the internal seal requires nearly full disassembly to replace.

Grinding Noise or Rattling

A grinding, rattling, or metallic noise during operation almost always means a foreign object is in the grinding chamber โ€” a small piece of broken glass, a bottle cap, or a small bone fragment. The chamber needs to be cleared before running the unit again. Running it with a hard object in the chamber damages the grinding components.

Reset Button Keeps Tripping

A reset button that trips repeatedly after being reset indicates the motor is overheating consistently. This is caused by a partial jam the motor is fighting against, a worn motor that draws too much current, or an undersized unit being overworked. Repeated tripping accelerates motor wear significantly.

When to Repair Your Disposal vs. Install a New One

Garbage disposals are one of the least expensive appliances in your home to replace. The decision is simpler than with larger appliances โ€” here’s how to think about it.

Repair Makes Sense Whenโ€ฆ

  • The unit is jammed โ€” jam clearing is always worth doing
  • The switch or wiring has failed, not the motor
  • The unit is leaking from the top flange seal
  • The unit is under 5 years old
  • It’s a high-horsepower premium unit worth preserving
  • The reset button tripped once due to a jam

New Installation Makes Sense Whenโ€ฆ

  • The unit is leaking from the bottom โ€” internal seal failure
  • The motor has burned out
  • The unit is 8โ€“10+ years old
  • The reset button trips repeatedly even without a jam
  • The unit is undersized for your household’s usage
  • Grinding performance has deteriorated significantly

Garbage Disposal Repair and Installation โ€” FAQ

Repair costs vary depending on the fault and the unit. NorTech provides a full diagnostic estimate on-site before any work begins โ€” you approve the price before we start.

Installation cost depends on the unit size, whether new drain or switch wiring is required, and whether haul-away of the old unit is included. NorTech provides upfront pricing before installation begins.

The motor is receiving power but the grinding plate is jammed โ€” usually by a hard object caught in the chamber. Do not run the disposal repeatedly when jammed as this can burn out the motor. Try the hex wrench port on the bottom of the unit first to manually free the jam before calling for service.

Check three things first: the red reset button on the bottom of the unit, the circuit breaker in your electrical panel, and the wall switch. If all three check out and there’s still no response, the motor or wiring has failed and needs professional diagnosis.

Leaks from the top indicate a failed sink flange seal โ€” repairable without replacement. Leaks from the side at the drain connection indicate a failed gasket โ€” also repairable. Leaks from the bottom of the unit mean the internal seal has failed and replacement is typically more cost-effective.

Jam clearing and switch replacement are always worth doing. If the motor has failed or the unit is leaking from the bottom due to a failed internal seal, replacement is usually more cost-effective given how affordable new units are. Our technicians will give you an honest recommendation on-site.
