Pool & Landscape Electrical

Water and electricity are a risky combination, which is why pool and yard wiring follows strict rules for bonding, grounding and ground-fault protection. A licensed electrician knows the details and makes sure pumps, heaters and lighting are safe. NorTech connects you with vetted licensed electricians who set their own price and handle permits and inspections.

Bonding, grounding and ground-fault protection

Pools and spas require an equipotential bonding system that connects metal parts such as ladders, rails, pumps and the pool shell so that no voltage difference can build up between them. Circuits near the water need GFCI protection, and outlets must be a safe distance away. An electrician inspects the existing system, finds missing connections and brings it up to current standards. This protection is not optional and is a common failure point in older pools.

Pumps, heaters and equipment circuits

Pool equipment draws substantial current and runs for hours each day, so circuits must be sized correctly with weather-rated disconnects. Variable-speed pumps, heat pumps and automation controllers each have specific requirements. The electrician selects the wire, conduit and breaker, installs a disconnect within sight of the equipment where required and tests everything under load. Good work here saves energy and reduces nuisance trips. Pump and heater circuits should also have the right disconnect within sight of the equipment, and the electrician should explain where it is and how to use it.

Landscape lighting and outdoor power

Low-voltage landscape lighting uses a transformer and timer to power fixtures safely, and it can highlight paths, trees and patios. The electrician runs cable at the right depth, protects connections from moisture and sets lighting zones. Underground wiring routes should be mapped and marked for later digging. A final test and a quick tutorial on the timer and photocell leave you with a system that works as intended. Keep the pool plans and the electrician’s sketch of buried wire routes, because they protect cables from shovels and trenchers in later projects.

An older pool may lack proper bonding or GFCI protection.
You want landscape lighting for paths, trees and patios.
A pool inspection flagged electrical concerns.
You are installing a spa, heat pump or automation system.
Breakers trip when pool equipment starts or when it rains.

Frequently asked

Pool & Landscape Electrical — common questions

Bonding connects all metal parts so they stay at the same electrical potential, preventing voltage differences that could shock someone in the water. It is a required safety feature.

Pool wiring is licensed electrical work in California and is permitted and inspected. Using a licensed electrician protects safety and insurance. Licensed work protects your insurance too.

Depth depends on the wire type, conduit and local code. Your electrician will install at the required depth and mark the route for future digging. Ask for the depth of each buried run in writing.

Low-voltage systems often do not, though line-voltage connections might. The electrician will explain what applies where you live. Ask about timers and photocells.

Yes. An inspection report documents bonding, grounding and GFCI protection, and lists any corrections needed. Ask for a written list of any corrections found.

Workmanship on circuits, bonding and connections is guaranteed for 90 days. Pumps, heaters and lights have separate manufacturer coverage, and damage from flooding or misuse is excluded.
