Concrete Patio & Slab Installation

A concrete patio gives you a flat, durable place for furniture, a grill, a hot tub or a shed. Good patios slope slightly away from the house and sit on a compacted base so they stay level. NorTech connects you with vetted concrete contractors who set their own price and finish slabs that last.

Size, slope and where the water goes

Plan the patio size around furniture, traffic and sun, then add room for a walkway or steps. The surface should slope about a quarter inch per foot away from the house so rain runs off. The contractor marks the layout, checks existing drainage and avoids low spots that trap water. Where soil is poor, a thicker base or footing may be needed. Think about future additions, such as a pergola or outdoor kitchen, so footings and electrical can be planned.

Base, reinforcement and control joints

A compacted gravel base keeps the slab from settling, and rebar or welded mesh helps hold small cracks tight instead of letting them open. Control joints are cut or tooled at intervals of roughly two to three times the slab thickness in feet, so any cracking follows planned lines. Thickness is typically four inches, with thicker edges where a hot tub, shed or heavy furniture will sit. Tree roots, buried utilities and sprinkler lines must be located before digging. Ask the contractor how the slab will be separated from the house wall with an expansion joint.

Finishing options, curing and care

Broom finishes give traction, salt finishes add subtle texture, and integral color gives a uniform tone that hides small stains. Hand troweling and edging create clean lines and rounded corners that resist chipping. Weather matters on pour day, and the crew protects the slab from rain, direct sun and wind while it cures. Wait several days before putting furniture on it and about a month before heavy loads. Sealing helps resist stains, and cleaning with mild detergent keeps the surface looking fresh for years.

Frequently asked

Concrete Patio & Slab Installation — common questions

Most patios are prepped and poured in one to three days, and the concrete cures over several days to a few weeks. Weather and permits can change that. Timing can vary with weather, access and permits, so ask for a realistic window.

Often not for a simple ground-level patio, but rules vary by city, especially around setbacks, drainage and lot coverage. Your contractor can tell you what applies and handle any permit or inspection if one is needed.

Sometimes a thin overlay or resurfacing system can refresh a sound slab. Cracked, heaving or poorly draining slabs are usually better removed and replaced. The contractor inspects before recommending either path.

Use a compacted base, reinforcement and control joints, and let the concrete cure slowly and fully. Some hairline cracking is normal as concrete shrinks, but a good installation keeps cracks small and straight.

Broom and salt finishes are slip-resistant and common outdoors, while integral color adds style without a big cost. Stamped patterns are available too. Choose based on traction, appearance and the sun exposure of the patio.

The contractor guarantees workmanship for 90 days, including scaling and finishing defects. Natural hairline cracks and settlement from poor soil beyond the base are not covered.
