Block Wall & Garden Wall Construction
A block wall gives you privacy, security and a clean backdrop for planting, and it can last for generations when the footing and reinforcement are right. Garden walls also create seating, planters and terraces. NorTech connects you with vetted licensed masons who set their own price and build walls that stand straight and strong.

Footings and reinforcement hold the wall up
A block wall is only as strong as the footing under it, which is a poured concrete strip set below the frost and soil-disturbance depth for your area. Vertical rebar runs from the footing up through the hollow cores of the block, and horizontal reinforcement ties the courses together. The cores that contain rebar are filled with grout, turning the wall into a reinforced structure that resists wind and earthquakes. Your mason follows local code for spacing and bar size, and inspections are common before grouting.
Height, property lines and permits
Fences and walls on property lines are regulated by height limits, setbacks and sometimes neighbor notification. Walls over a few feet often need a permit and may need engineering, especially if they retain soil or sit on a slope. Know where your boundary is before building, and talk with neighbors early. The mason can review the survey, mark the line and explain what the city requires so that the wall stays legal and avoids disputes. Ask whether the wall will be built to match the house color and texture, and whether a sample panel can be finished first so you can approve the look.
Finishes, caps, drainage and care
Plain block can be painted, stuccoed or covered with stone or brick veneer for a custom look. Cap blocks or coping shed water and finish the top neatly. Weep holes or drainage behind the wall prevent water pressure from building up. Seal or paint the wall to reduce staining and efflorescence, the white salts that sometimes appear on masonry. Keep gutters and sprinklers from soaking the wall, and clean it with mild soap and a soft brush when needed.
