Tree Planting & Transplanting

Moving a tree is possible, but its roots do not like it. Success depends on species, size, timing and care before and after the move. NorTech connects you with a verified licensed landscape contractor who looks at the tree and the destination and bids the work in writing.

Whether a tree can be moved

Small and medium trees move much more successfully than large ones, and some species handle transplanting better than others. A contractor considers trunk diameter, root habit, health and the season. Large trees may need root pruning a year before the move to encourage new feeder roots near the trunk. They also check the new site for sun, soil, drainage and space. Sometimes replacing with a new tree is wiser than moving an old one. Photograph the tree and the planting site from several angles before the visit, and share them, since good photos speed up the assessment and the bid.

Digging, moving and replanting

The root ball is dug to a size based on trunk diameter, then wrapped in burlap or placed in a basket and lifted with equipment. Tree spades move smaller trees quickly, while larger trees may need a crane. The new hole is prepared in advance and dug wide so roots can spread. The tree is set at the same depth as before, braced, backfilled and watered thoroughly. Move it as quickly as possible to prevent roots from drying, and keep the root ball moist.

Aftercare is the real work

Transplanted trees need deep, regular water for two years, mulch and protection from lawn equipment and string trimmers. Do not fertilize heavily at first, since the roots are still recovering. Stake loosely for stability and remove stakes within a year. Watch for wilting, leaf scorch and pests, and have an arborist check progress and advise on pruning. A few extra weeks of attention in the first season make a big difference to survival. Plan for temporary irrigation and keep a written watering schedule on the fridge for the first season, because most failures come from too little or too much water.

Frequently asked

Tree Planting & Transplanting — common questions

Size, species, access and the destination vary. The contractor must see the tree and site to plan equipment and cost. Raise any questions at the estimate stage so there are no surprises later.

In mild climates, the dormant season from late fall to early spring is best. Avoid heat waves and hard freezes. Photos and written notes make it easier to document and compare options.

Many do with proper technique and care, though large or old trees carry more risk. The contractor explains the odds. A short written scope keeps expectations clear for both sides.

A single move often takes a day, though root pruning ahead of time is spread over a season. Larger trees take longer to plan. It helps to share photos of the area when you request a quote.

Deep watering several times a week at first, then less often as the roots grow. The contractor gives a schedule and may install a drip line. Photos and written notes make it easier to document and compare options.

The contractor guarantees workmanship for 60 days. Survival depends on the tree’s condition, weather and care, and no guarantee of survival is made. Your provider can explain how this applies to your property before you book.
