Why homeowners choose standing seam

The raised seams between panels hide the fasteners, which reduces leak points compared with exposed-fastener metal. The panels can be formed on site in a single length from eave to ridge, and the finishes resist fading and chalking. Metal roofs are fire resistant, shed snow and can reflect solar heat, which lowers cooling costs. They cost more than asphalt shingles up front but often last two or three times as long. Panel type, gauge, color and details

Choices include steel and aluminum, various gauges, coating systems and seam profiles. Thicker metal resists denting and oil canning, which is the slight waviness visible in flat panels. Colors are baked on and come with finish warranties. Details at valleys, chimneys, skylights and walls matter as much as the panels, since poor flashing causes leaks. A good roofer shows you sample panels, explains clip systems for thermal movement and describes how snow retention and ventilation will be handled.

Installation, permits and long-term care

Installation begins with removing the old roof, repairing the deck and installing underlayment. Panels are locked together over clips that allow movement. The work needs a permit, and the inspector checks the deck and the final install. Metal roofs need little maintenance beyond gutters and occasional rinsing, but you should walk it only with proper footwear and avoid scratching the finish. Keep the warranty documents for both the panels and the roofer’s work. Ask for a sample of the exact panel finish and a written note on how scratches and touch-ups will be handled after installation.
